Thirty years ago, in November 1992, Ishida, Honjo and their collaborators reported the discovery of the #PD1 gene in @embojournal
https://www.embopress.org/doi/abs/10.1002/j.1460-2075.1992.tb05481.x
I spoke with Tasuku Honjo, Pierre Golstein (whose team first cloned #CTLA4) & Facundo Batista about the discovery earlier this year.
The initial project had absolutely nothing to do with checkpoints or #immunotherapy

'Prosecutors described Balwani as an “equal participant” in helping Theranos defraud investors of more than $900mn in funding — which gave the company a valuation of $9bn — on the promise its technology could carry out a range of tests on a single drop of blood.
Instead, the machines failed to perform as promised, as later revealed by whistleblowers, and the company entered a death spiral that has become symbolic of Silicon Valley’s risk-taking culture.'

'The lack of doctors entering ID fellowships — and the ensuing shortage of these specialists — has been a concern for years, with experts pointing to the comparatively low earnings these physicians make as a major disincentive for doctors considering which field to enter. But this year’s numbers marked a backslide. Fully a quarter of available positions went unfilled. Among the fellowship programs, 44% didn’t fill their slots, according to data from the National Resident Matching Program.'

So ends a historic attempt at global health equity: The board of Gavi votes this week on ending #Covax, even though some Gavi-supported countries are at <20% Covid vaccine coverage. The average among Gavi-countries is 52%. And 37 middle-income countries would be cut off after a one-time infusion of cash to take over Covid vaccination on their own. Thanks to vaccine nationalism, Omicron and a series of missteps, demand for shots globally is minimal. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/06/health/covid-vaccines-covax-gavi.html?unlocked_article_code=I0gswX0sD7xUortbHHQaakgy94bVmymnrTOO1hgGFmEc3tcgVF-HNYVVGRKFS3P6vVBTTqbeozQSAjd6eRsVq5FiPBmDQPJAUJhiecgkIqyzrq07Gzg2JzwRJJUOF7dd1tgP6dqQnzJ_F1cXJL5W5908i4b5mL6Kgd2vrRGu6TL1LYOqCzpcpr6xlONVg1LjyCUVWhsCLF7WSXr1ZiLTTIxjBUa_5C2QKzUnbcTR0BaIBVRTB1b5K5eRZcfBIfZ5MuYllgMc0M8ArvoddQMGP3kHHo1tlU1q8uVIuBLnSJFZDxc-Hgdh8Rnke_e9LDhUNgFeo6z_pWSMHZVmeir_RW_naQ&smid=share-url

#Advent Day7: #Drosophila helvetica is our final (and most enigmatic?) obscura group fly. It is another common, small, dark, sap-flux feeder, but it is the only Eurasian member of the North American pseudoobscura/affinis clade https://www.jstor.org/stable/2422464 . With < 5 WOS-indexed papers, all I can say is that: it’s not hard to ID (sex combs or ovipositor); it is hard to keep in the lab; it has very simple courtship https://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/4533126 ; and the genome has just been sequenced https://tolqc.cog.sanger.ac.uk/darwin/insects/Drosophila_helvetica/

Hi all, my #introduction! I lead a #neuroscience research lab at Emory University called the Perception and Action Lab. We study how the brain allows us to actively explore and learn about the world through body motion. We're particularly interested in modeling and understanding distributed computations across multiple brain areas, and how these computations change during hearing loss and other conditions. I mostly post about work but sometimes other things too!
