'What types of responses can occur transgenerationally? Can the brain coordinate these responses?'
Throwback to the Fall of 2021, the second #EMBOPodcast with @Odedrechavi "Physiologically Irreverent"
'Using genetic knockouts and specific inhibitors, we demonstrate that glycosaminoglycans, integrins, and the TGF-β signaling axis are required for S-mediated barrier dysfunction. Notably, we show that SARS-CoV-2 infection caused leak in vivo, which was reduced by inhibiting integrins. Our findings offer mechanistic insight into SARS-CoV-2-triggered vascular leak, providing a starting point for development of therapies targeting COVID-19.'

"The concept that scientific articles can be bought and sold (8–12) contradicts everything that most researchers wish to believe about scientific publishing, and some readers may doubt that paper mills exist. We will therefore summarise what is known or predicted of paper mill operations and their likely drivers and enablers. We will summarise the evidence that paper mills have contributed to the human gene research literature at scale and describe why human gene research may be particularly vulnerable to industrial-scale research fraud."

Targeting Tumor-Promoting Microenvironment Through CCR5 Blockade in @colorectal @cancer @liver Metastases
#Cancer progression is a process in which cancer cells and #immune cells interact with each other in a way that can lead to the growth and spread of cancer. In #colorectal cancer, when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, it is called @metastasis and it is very difficult to treat.

'In #malaria parasites, sexual reproduction coincides with transmission to the vector host. Sex determination is non-genetic, with each haploid parasite capable of producing either a male or a female gametocyte in the human host. The hierarchy of events and molecular mechanisms that trigger sex determination and maintenance of sexual identity are yet to be elucidated.'

'It is remarkable, for example, that much of the funding for challenging current practice in evolutionary biology comes from The John Templeton Foundation (Pennisi 2016), which is committed to using science to reveal underlying purpose, and rejecting what Nagel (2012) calls “the Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception of Nature”. But perhaps this is just history repeating itself as farce: if poetry couldn’t save us, nothing on the laundry lists will either.'

Did you know that for centuries, a “gossip” was a woman who attended her pregnant daughter’s, sister’s, or friend’s delivery? The word was a corruption of “god-sib” or “god-sibling,” meaning “sister in the Lord.” The gossips offered emotional and physical support to mother and midwife. It was only later that the term took on a derogatory meaning.

"The pandemic has been a very challenging time for preprints in the Health Sciences. There was a lot of media reporting on preprints in the early days of the pandemic. Many of these didn't get to be published and had serious flaws"

Delighted to share that my first ever first-author paper is now out from Cell Reports! We started out with a gene, a behavioral phenotype, and no idea what was going on at the circuit level to link those things. Classic genetic methods (temporal-specific and cell-type-specific rescue) told us the gene acts acutely in neurons-- but which ones? We developed a computational method that ended up IDing a new projection to the decision-making circuit! https://www.cell.com/cell-reports/fulltext/S2211-1247(22)01678-3

'Tutankhamun himself was beset with poor health. CT scans and DNA analysis of his mummified body have revealed that he suffered from a cleft palate, withered leg (he walked with the aid of a stick, several examples of which were buried with him), and multiple bouts of malaria. His death, before he reached his 20s, was not unusual for the time.'

During winter in lockdown, myself and a few friends had a #photography project which was basically walking around the streets at night, taking photos of #Bristol and the 'nightlife' that remained when we were without our usual social venues. It was actually really good for our collective mental health to have something to focus on, and important to document a time in our lives that was just really weird.
Big effort @BRxAD & co looking at impact of #COVID19 on #AMR.
