#introduction J'enseigne la biologie moléculaire (CNU64), et cellulaire, l'immunologie à l'Université d'Orléans.
Confirmation that Omicron isn't in fact milder than ancestral lineage (though milder than Delta), so apparent mildness is clearly due to immunity rather than viral evolution to be less virulent.

Job alert: #Postdoc on the repeatability of evolution and historical contingencies in thermal adaptation of an insect pest species. Job is based at Uppsala University (Sweden), supervised by David Berger and me. Ad is here: https://evol.mcmaster.ca/~brian/evoldir/PostDocs/UUppsala.GenomicsThermalAdaptation
Continuing #introduction: by day I'm a professor (biochemistry & cell biology) running a research lab where we've published many studies using budding yeast (think beer and bread).
So naturally, as an artist by night, I had to sculpt our favorite organism. Here is Saccharomyces cerevisiae in late anaphase, mother cell producing a daughter cell, jeweled chromosomes separating inside the nucleus. Bronze, silver, 3D printed steel, and apatite gemstones. #sciart #cellbiology #celldivision
Let's get #SciArt flowing into Mastodon!
What are some of your #SciArt (science-themed art) works you want to highlight? I will boost.
After trying many different media over the years (including drawing, embroidery etc) I found love in pottery. Now I make pottery pieces that highlight underappreciated organisms. Here are some examples of #worms, #jellyfish, #instects, #spiders etc. These are all boxes with lids!
Many #CRISPR therapies for #globinopathies such as #SickleCell and #thalassemia
re-express fetal hemoglobin. But there's a lesser-known globin with many advantages: Much more similar to adult globin, already expressed at low levels throughout adult human life, and used as the main globin in some species. ETH Pioneer Fellow Mandy Boontanrart figured out how to use #geneediting to "fix" the delta globin promoter, with potential applications to treat red cell disorders. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.12.19.521003v1
For thousands of years, fermenting beer was considered a household task for #women.
By the Middle Ages, some sold beer at English markets. Female brewers wore tall, pointy hats to be easily spotted. They stood by cauldrons & often had cats to keep mice away.
Sound familiar? It should.
You see, when male brewers felt threatened by their success, they accused the women of witchcraft. These rumors may have led to some witch iconography we still recognize today.

"The virus-neutralizing activity of antibodies can be readily defined in robust in vitro assays and in passive transfer experiments. But to what degree vaccination-induced humoral immune responses prevent infection and pathogen replication also in humans, and therefore serve as indicators or even correlates of sterilizing immunity, cannot be easily established."

In Search of True Color: Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky’s Flawed Images. "Archived amid Prokudin-Gorsky’s vast photographic survey of the Russian Empire, we find images shot through with starshatter cracks, blebbed with mildew, and blurred by motion. Within such moments of unmaking, Erica X Eisen uncovers the overlapping forces at play behind these pioneering efforts in colour photography." https://publicdomainreview.org/essay/in-search-of-true-color

Excited to share our new manuscript on a novel #neuropeptide family that regulates #feeding across #evolution. Kudos to #Pat_TFrancisco for tackling this challenging project and coming up with the name #marmite. #homeostasis https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.12.12.520095v3 Still figuring this space out. Hi all! I’ve just made the jump from Twitter. I’m a #PhD candidate researching #frogs and how they are responding to #anthropogenic change, such as #urbanisation and #climatechange. Interested in how this affects their #behaviour #ecology and #immunology.
The expression of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) is important for immune responses to infection. In Science Signaling, Boccuni et al. found that transcription factors downstream of the stress-induced kinase p38 enhanced ISG expression. The stressed cells produced more pathogen-fighting factors but also showed increased cell death, highlighting the consequences of coincident stress-induced and interferon-induced signaling. #Proteomics hivemind, a question:
Is it common to miss out on capturing interleukins, cytokines, & chemokines in unbiased routine LC-MS/MS data ?
