Spatial-omics goes 3D🤗! Out at Cell @CellCellPress@twitter.com 👉🏼 We developed DISCO-MS with @labs_mann@twitter.com, a spatial proteomics technology for specimens fully imaged in 3D. DISCO-MS is aided by robotics and enables the study of diseases at their early stages. cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8

"Here, we utilized unbiased genetic screens to map drug/gene interactions for a variety of clinically approved therapies used in the treatment of AML. This effort highlighted a unique genetic relationship between response to venetoclax and the function of specific RNA splicing factors."

"We show that a clonal population of soil amoebae invading a spatially structured bacterial matrix spontaneously differentiates into subpopulations with different types of movement. This strategy determines both the rates of bacteria consumption and the effectiveness of different bacterial antipredator defenses."

@JamesGleick
Inspiring! You inspired quite a few scientists, including at least 10 university professors peppered across different continents. And many still work with ideas in the space of complexity / dynamical systems. In fact, one of them, @PessoaBrain, just wrote his own book on a similar topic:

We don't talk much about the role that nonfiction books play in inspiring the next generation of scientists. Not just to pursue scientific careers but also the approaches they take with the questions. No doubt that this happens and it clearly happened with Chaos. A big thanks from all of us, @JamesGleick!

Location, location, location.

"Most intuitive ligands for these receptors, such as LPS, only exist in bacterial outer membranes and are recognized, in this case, by TLR4 on the APC surface. Other ligands, such as dsRNA produced by viral replication, are sensed by a magnitude of intracellular and endosomal receptors (3, 4). Less intuitive are structures such as ssRNA or dsDNA, which are abundant in virtually all cell types, and hence do not appear to be ideal pathogen-associated molecular patterns because they are not exclusively pathogen associated. However, in this case, the immune system harnesses another fundamental aspect of cellular biology, namely subcellular location."

Salman Rushdie, discussing why he has never written an apolitical book:

"Sometimes your character is not your destiny. Sometimes a plane flying into a building is your destiny. The larger world gets into the story not because I want to write about politics, but because I want to write about people."

I wanted to share this Call for Vision Statements for New Neuroscience Collaborations funded by the Simons Foundation in case someone finds it useful. This is significant funding to tackle risky research ideas. Scientists can be based anywhere in the world. Share with people you know!

"Mouse studies are sometimes neglected by human immunologists, on the basis that mice are not humans and the infections studied are experimental[...]. Conversely, human studies are sometimes neglected by mouse immunologists, on the basis of the uncontrolled conditions of study.."

I would really like to increase my network in #Mastodon. Please help me connect with people in #ecology #Evolution #entomology #pollinators #bees. Please share @jessicalwarelab @CorrieMoreau @alexwild Thanks!

My four-year-old son has become obsessed with me telling him DUNE stories for bedtime, which usually involves me summarizing the less violent parts of the novel for him. Tonight, I improvised.

You can read my Dune Christmas tale at Post (too many words for Mastodon): post.news/article/2JJInPWdHjYw

'Public services in Brazil face a “very real threat of collapse” as a result of the mismanagement by the outgoing far-right government, and the incoming administration will have a “herculean task” in rebuilding damaged institutions, particularly in the fields of health, education and the environment, the country’s president-elect has said.'

#Drosophila #Advent Day23: Another fungus feeder in the #Steganinae with Leucophenga hungarica! This strikingly bright yellow drosophilid has a mysterious history: It was first recorded in the UK in only 2016 dipterists.org.uk/sites/defaul , but was initially described only in 2000 – having been collected in central Europe very infrequently since 1974 drosophila.jp/jdd/class/070401 . Where was this big yellow fly until then, and why is it spreading now? #Diptera #Fungus #Entomology

What if we could study #cancer progression and #metastasis in vivo, in real time, and at single-cell resolution?

David Entenberg, Maja Oktay, and John Condeelis at Albert Einstein College of Medicine summarize the current state of the art of #intravital #imaging, present some of the challenges that remain in the field, how to address them, and future perspectives.

'Beijing’s healthcare system was long thought to be among the best prepared in the country to deal with a surge of Covid infections. But the central government’s decision this month to abruptly abandon its draconian zero-Covid policy, which had held off the disease for nearly three years through mass testing and quarantines, has sparked one of the country’s biggest coronavirus outbreaks.'
