"In “Billion Year Spree,” his influential 1973 study of science fiction, the writer Brian Aldiss identified a kind of post-apocalyptic novel that he called “the cozy catastrophe.” These were stories about the end of the world in which a resourceful survivor — usually a British man from the middle class — puts together a relatively comfortable life for himself in the ruins."

Satyendranath Bose was a brilliant theoretical physicist born this week in 1894 in East Bengal (now Bangladesh).
In 1924, while on faculty at the University of Dacca, he wrote a short paper to Albert Einstein about indistinguishable particles related to quantum theory.
Einstein immediately recognized Bose’ genius, translated the work into German & made sure it was published. Bose ideas led to Bose-Einstein statistics which continue to be studied in quantum mechanics. #science #history

Brazilian Authorities Will Revive Fraud Case Against George Santos
There is no bottom to this particular rabbit hole. If Santos was a fictional character, no one would publish the novel because his tale would be deemed too unbelievable. #politics #uspol #uspolitics
"The Galician regional government says that returnees – the majority are Argentinians – are settling in the area at a rate of three a day. After more than 150 years of steady depopulation, in 2019 more people arrived than left, while, for the first time in its history, the reverse was true for Argentina."

Oldest-surviving anatomical theatre, located in Padua and built in 1594. Over the entrance is the Latin inscription: “hic est locus ubi mors gaudet succurrere vitam.” Roughly: “this is the place where death delights to help life (or the living).”

A review of cardiotoxicity in CART therapy in the European Heart Journal. Not surprisingly, a lot of it is linked to cytokine release syndrome. Includes also a brief look at the interesting possibility of using CART to treat heart disease.

We need more #CRISPR Cas systems isolated from bacteria unknown to our immune system. You can look around on this planet, in every single corner. Or you can travel back in time. We chose the second path, and reported the outcome today in #NatureMicrobiology

Since it’s the new year, I figure an #introduction is in order. My name is Taylor, and I’m entering my final year as a #CompBio PhD candidate at Cornell.
My research is primarily focused on using #ML to understand #regulation of gene expression in grasses. I am particularly interested in #representation and #mechanistic modeling.
My other interests include science in the media, supporting Black scientists, and trivia podcasts.
I hope to have some great discussions on here!

Ever try to #drug an #oncoprotein only to have the #tumor lose its dependency on it and become drug resistant? Introducing #RIPTACs (Regulated Induced Proximity Targeting Chimeras) in collaboration with #Halda Therapeutics. RIPTACs selectively kill cells by differentially accumulating an antiproliferative agent via an induced Protein:Protein Interaction (#PPI) to a differentially expressed protein. Importantly, target protein function is not needed for RIPTAC action.
