Happy new year, fly folks!
Here is a new methods paper from my friend (and very talented postdoc) Federica Mangione. She describes how she manages to photoablate single cells in the Drosophila pupal epidermis or in developing tactile bristles without damaging the neighbouring cells.
Enjoy!

A very specific commission that I requested from https://madalenaparreira.com for a review of Dan Davis' "The Compatibility Gene" in the now defunct magazine Lab Times.
I am a little nervous about this, but...
I'm ready to open up DataPipe for beta testing. DataPipe is a service that will send data from your behavioral experiments to the OSF, for free.
Don't use this for critical data collection yet. It might have unexpected outages during this final round of pre-release development. But, if this is something you might be interested in using once it is ready for stable use, please try it out and let me know what can be better.

Hey friends - I am in Antarctica with extremely slow and limited internet and I have a book coming out this year that I'd normally be posting more about because pre-orders are *critical* to a book's success.
Help me get the word out?

From black holes to space elevators and extraterrestrial civilizations, this is a rich and beautifully illustrated book for your coffee table. And astronaut Mae Jemison wrote the Foreword!
"The Justice Department filed a lawsuit on Thursday against AmerisourceBergen, one of the country’s largest pharmaceutical distributors, accusing the company of knowingly distributing opioids that were later resold illegally."

"The colossal, maze-like Poggioreale, open since 1837 and among the largest cemeteries in Europe, is spread across a hilltop overlooking Naples. It is the burial place of a long list of illustrious Neapolitans, but in recent decades has fallen into severe disrepair owing to a combination of poor management and the ruinous repercussions of organised crime.
In scenes akin to a horror film, the cemetery’s problems were thrust under the spotlight last January when two columbariums containing more than 600 burial niches partially collapsed, an event believed to have been triggered by the digging of a tunnel beneath the cemetery as part of the extension of Naples’ metro network."
It has been over a decade since a student was enrolled in a #botany degree in the UK.
Experts believe there has been a gradual erosion of knowledge about plants among biology graduates and the general public as a result.

The results seem preliminary and I am curious to see more results from this interesting project.
Supporting a child with long COVID – tips from parents of children living with the condition
"Beijing has dramatically reduced testing, junked contact tracing and is scrapping most quarantine requirements; some regions now permit infected people with mild or no symptoms to go to work. The pandemic virus is thus free to circulate unobserved in a sixth of the world’s population — just as the rest of the globe is clamouring for normality."

Happy to announce this pub, which is the culmination of last 10 years of my career beginning as far back as my MSc🎓
We find that #antimicrobialpeptides are evolved to control specific #microbiome bacteria. This example is a textbook case of host #immune #evolution being shaped by the microbiome 🦠

@cyrilpedia and re why it works in mice/macaques and not in humans, this is frustrating but probably also an explanation worth pursuing. Certainly there are cross species differences but durability of mucosal immune responses is difficult to achieve in all; one thing I wonder about in this study is if *local* B and Tfh responses are transiently induced and then fade, or not induced at all.
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
