Had some fun and wrote a post about the different types of neuroscientists I've seen.

Such results suggest that there just may be a gaping hole in our current knowledge of flaviviruses.

Specifically, a gaping hole representing an untold number of unrecognized persistent brain infections — that simply can not be detected with currently available clinical technology.

Let's hope many insect neuroscientists working in #Drosophila, #mosquito and other critters apply.

Contact Chris Potter of #Anopheles mosquito research fame potterlab.johnshopkins.edu/ for an insider view of how it is to run an insect neuro lab there.

"The structure and function of neural connectomes are shaped by a small number of design principles", by Haber, Wanner, Friedrich, Schneidman, 2023 biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

"we learn probabilistic generative models for the connectomes of the olfactory bulb of zebrafish, part of the mouse visual cortex, and of C. elegans. We show that, in all cases, models that rely on a surprisingly small number of simple biological and physical features are highly accurate in replicating a wide range of properties of the measured circuits."

"we simulate synthetic circuits generated by our model for the olfactory bulb of zebrafish and show that they replicate the computation that the real circuit performs in response to olfactory cues."

"Current methodologies for tracking the behaviour of specific lymphocytes identify clones of a defined antigen-receptor - antigen binding affinity. However, lymphocytes can receive antigenic signals from undefined or endogenous antigens, and the strength of each signal, even for the same lymphocyte, varies with accessory signalling, across tissues and across time. We present a novel fate-mapping mouse, that, by tracking lymphocyte clones and their progenies from induced antigen signals, overcomes these hurdles and provides novel insights into the maintenance of tissue homeostasis."

"Scientists, clinicians and medical technologists in LMICs need to be empowered to design, maintain and build low-cost MRI systems on site6. And to do so, they need access to open-source hardware and software, in line with the United Nations’ 2020 Roadmap for Digital Cooperation, which stresses the need for digital inclusion for all, and for building architectures for digital cooperation."

The #WOEPSR23 Programme is now available! Workshop on "The #Organisation, #Economics and #Policy of #ScientificResearch" in Munich on 13/14 April 2023 jointly organised with Technische Universität München.

In memory of Paul David, who passed away in January 2023, the scientific committee of WOEPSR announces the “2023 WOEPSR Award in Memory of Paul A. David” for a young Economist under the age of 40 or with less than 10 years from the doctoral degree.

As the great Lily Tomlin put it, the trouble with the rat race is that even if you win, you're still a rat.

"This competitive system has deep consequences for research. To be successful, it is necessary to publish fast and often — publish or perish. As a result, researchers feel the need to market their result to the community, which leads to a sensationalist and inaccurate or misleading style of scientific reporting."

"A potential mechanism for the failure of oral vaccines is the local outgrowth of RORγt+ regulatory T (Treg) cells in the small intestine that limits mucosal inflammation and immune reactivity but not systemic immune responses, since systemic infection is most dangerous to the host."
