"Spain is to trial a new science funding programme, which will provide researchers with stable funding for four years to explore new ideas and build capacity, without being tied to specific projects. If all goes well, up to €700 million a year in supplementary funding will be available by 2033."

'In this review, we provide an overview of mouse genetic reference panels and the opportunities they provide for the study of cardiometabolic diseases and relevant traits, with particular emphasis on the Hybrid Mouse Diversity Panel (HMDP)'

'The heart-focused company says that its ALS candidate, reldesemtiv, was ineffective in a phase 3 trial compared to placebo after a second interim analysis, according to an announcement Friday. The data monitoring committee recommended that the trial be discontinued and Cytokinetics says it will stop treating people with the drug, including patients in the open-label extension. '

"The story of her leadership of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency is of two huge imperatives — first, to chart a new path for the agency after Brexit forced it to leave the embrace of the European Medicines Agency, then to set the international pace in approving life-saving Covid vaccines and therapeutics."

This is very promising: Yasmine Belkaid is a great scientist and it is, to say the least, timely to recruit someone with a deep understanding of infectious disease - particularly of infectious diseases affecting disadvantaged communities - to run Pasteur.
A bit of good news for the weekend.

'The Biden administration on Friday finalized new rules meant to cut down on widespread overbilling by private Medicare Advantage insurance plans, but softened the approach after intense lobbying by the industry.'

"The ruling took effect immediately and applies nationwide. It affects dozens of potentially lifesaving preventive health care services that the federal government recommends, including drugs that prevent H.I.V. transmission and screenings for adolescent depression."

"Theoretical studies predict that, under stationary environmental variation, the level of plasticity should evolve to match the predictability of selection at the timing of development. However, the extent to which patterns of evolution of plasticity for more integrated traits are mirrored by their underlying molecular mechanisms remains unclear, especially in response to well-characterized selective pressures exerted by environmental predictability."

Antisense oligos & n=1 cases:

“A lot of clinicians might have a patient with a rare disease and want to help, but don’t have any idea how to approach the FDA. Where do you find a source of oligonucleotide for under $500,000? For a single patient?”

"After peripheral nerve injury, there is an increase in the population of macrophages in the sensory ganglia which have been involved in different conditions, especially in neuropathic pain development and nerve regeneration. However, it is still under debate whether macrophages accumulation in the sensor ganglia after peripheral nerve injury is due to the local proliferation of resident macrophages or as a result of blood monocytes infiltration."

'Here, we developed a memory-guided behavioral task that mice perform reliably in the head-fixed setting for months, and performed anatomical tracing, neural dynamic recordings, and optogenetic perturbations to characterize the role of these intervening circuits in memory consolidation.'

I would prefer to see the IGC rebooted as an independent research institute (they are rare in Portugal). But if the Gulbenkian is hellbent on having it annexed by an existing public university, the ITQB-NOVA is a much better fit. I ran the PhD program at IGC for a few years, we could not have done it without ITQB as the academic partner. There is also a complementarity in themes, the ITQB provides expertise in structural biology and biochemistry that the IGC does not have (the wonderful, generous and deeply missed Alekos Athanasiadis was the only real IGC resource for this).

Interesting work in mice on checkpoint inhibitors and bacterial translocation.

"They observed translocation of some bacterial species during ICT enhanced dendritic cell activation and lymph node remodeling. These enhanced responses promoted antitumor T cell responses in tumor -raining lymph nodes and subcutaneous tumors."

None of Marsh’s books are for the faint of heart. In his prior books, he openly acknowledges his mistakes that caused harm to patients. As a patient himself now at old age, he witnesses the impassive cruelty of the medical system, and ponders on unresolved tensions between doctors, the medical system and society at large.

Best patient memoirs?

In the context of writing a book about brain/mind research, I want to understand more about how the disorders I am writing about impact individuals. For this, I'm (in part) turning to patient memoirs. Any recommendations?

Here are a two I'm reading:

Holy hell, this is an absolutely incredible statement from the Lemkin Institute (@LemkinInstitute).

"Lemkin" refers to "Raphael Lemkin," the individual who coined the word "genocide." (Continued below.)
