#OTD 1 July 1879 Léon Jouhaux was born. He led the Confédération Générale du Travail, France's largest trade union, before WWI until 1947, fighting for the 8 hour workday & paid holidays. He survived deportation to Buchenwald concentration camp & won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1951

Anyone surprised? This is what many, if not most, viruses do. More information regarding the biology and ecology of the SARS-2 virus in the public domain may have limited the many circulating conspiracy theories. Communication by the science community could have been better. The confusion of what ‘spillover’ technically is serves as a glaring example.

“Once the virus has its foot in the door, it’s easier to adapt further.”

'Frog taxidermy found inside French mansion that had been sealed for 100 years.'

On the assumption that there will be another influx of folks from :birdsite: - Welcome 🤗!

#Introduction I'm Dave, I'm a #scientist!

You'll get the hang of this place soon enough - the lack of algorithm means you need to work a little harder at getting your home feed up and running, bit stick at it, it's worth it.

@FunSizeSuze
I actually most prefer to follow hashtags - easier to remember than people!

My fav hashtags #IDMastodon #AMR #MedMastodon #medicine #immunology (I accept these are not to everyone liking!)

And your hashtags 👇 too

#Science #research #digitaltransformation #scicomm

Alrighty, time to get serious about finding all the best folks here on Mastodon! Hi, everyone. Who are the cool movers and shakers in #science, #research, #digitaltransformation, #scicomm and more? Tag your fave follows and I’ll join you!

"In a controversial move, Australia will become the world’s first country to allow the drugs psilocybin and MDMA to be prescribed by doctors to treat psychiatric conditions including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. But many scientists are concerned that research has not yet conclusively shown that these drugs are safe or effective. And some clinicians fear that the regulation that will govern access to the drugs is insufficient."

Welcome to #Mastodon 🦣 new people running away from the 🐦 on 🔥🔥

Here are my 2 cents on how I got 🦣 to work for me,

I started with following who I knew from 🐦 and liked

I listed the topics I am interested in reading about, put those into # and started following people with the same interests

The more I followed, the better the experience became :apartyblobcat:

Always caption your pix, always be courteous and kind 😊

🦣 has an EDIT button :ablobcall:

Have fun! :ablobattention:

We need a service where we can all upload our social graph from our Twitter backups, and use that to find our friends on the social web.

So, kind of like movetodon, fedifinder or debirdify, but it doesn't depend on the Twitter API.

80 years ago today, Willem Arondeus was executed by Nazis after he bravely bombed a building to destroy 800,000 identity cards.

He was an openly-gay Dutch artist who forged documents for Jewish people.

His last words were "Tell people that homosexuals are not cowards."

"The recognition that failure needs to be normalized for postdocs and PhD students has gained traction over the past decade, with highly successful scientists and researchers publishing their ‘CVs of failure’."

When cancer behaves like an infectious disease, vaccines may be the solution.

'Devil facial tumour cells spread from animal to animal and are able to slip past the devil’s immune system because they produce few of the molecules called major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-1) proteins, which the immune system uses to recognize harmful invaders. The vaccine targets one of the two forms of the disease and aims to make the tumour cells more visible to the immune system.'

A healing #wound is a microcosm of many cell states found during #organogenesis. In addition to dead and dying cells, one may find proliferating cells, migrating cells, and cells that are differentiating or switching fate. How is this multitude of cell states, often mutually exclusive, established and maintained for successful repair and #regeneration?

'Mavericks, also known as Polintons, are unique because they share features of both transposons and viruses. Like transposons, Mavericks are flanked by terminal inverted repeats and can readily jump and insert into genomes. Like viruses, they code for a large number of proteins, including a type-B DNA polymerase, a retroviral-like integrase, as well as major and minor capsid proteins'

'El primer caso documentado de un cáncer provocado por un agente externo fue, como usted recuerda en el documental, el de los deshollinadores de Londres. Ellos desarrollaron cáncer de escroto porque solían hacer sus necesidades sin lavarse las manos, y el hollín tenía agentes carcinógenos.'

Super interesting. Jill Lepore writes in the NYT today about the absurdity of an unamendable constitution when amendment was baked in-- and launches publicly The Amendment Project (amendmentsproject.org) a database of amendments proposed over the last 200+ years. #Constitution #History #Histodons #SCOTUS nytimes.com/2023/07/01/opinion
