@cyrilpedia I heard the beginning of the first episode. It's chilling and yet another example how medical staff doesn't believe in our pain. Ever.

Manumission, the legal process of granting freedom, presented another avenue for escape. However, unlike their Spanish and Portuguese counterparts, the British were hesitant to embrace manumission. They were reluctant to establish an intermediate social group between free white individuals and enslaved black people, limiting opportunities for legally obtaining freedom.

'To address this problem, Cuzick et al. used the Pathogen-Host Interactions database (PHI-base), which curates knowledge from the text, tables and figures published in over 200 journals, as a case study. A framework was developed that could capture the many observable traits (phenotype annotations) for interactions and link them directly to the combination of genotypes involved in those interactions across multiple scales – ranging from microscopic to macroscopic. This demonstrated that it was possible to build a framework of software tools to enable curation of interactions between species in more detail than had been done before.'
'Here, we show in multiple cancer models that CXCR3+ Treg cells were increased in tumors compared with lymphoid tissues, exhibited an activated phenotype, and interacted preferentially with CXCL9-producing BATF3+ dendritic cells (DCs). Genetic ablation of CXCR3 in Treg cells disrupted DC1-Treg cell interactions and concomitantly increased DC-CD8+ T cell interactions.'

'Djuna has been publishing science fiction (and film criticism) in South Korea for over 25 years, without making any biographical revelations. “Counterweight,” their first full-length work to appear in English, in a crisp translation by Anton Hur, is an efficient, fast-paced cyberpunk story that is at its best when unpacking the ramifications of the ubiquitous “Worms,” neural implants that network users together and offer various kinds of augmentation, from internet-like access to information to much stranger mutations in perception and personality.'

'The new podcast The Retrievals hears from a dozen women who had the same procedure at the Yale Fertility Center and who all reported extreme pain throughout. At the time they were told by staff they had been given the maximum amount of pain relief, meaning they couldn’t have more. However, it later transpired that a nurse at the clinic had been stealing fentanyl and replacing it with saline solution. It is thought that 200 patients had been denied pain relief during egg retrievals over a period of five months.'

Although Syria was a safe haven for Circassian refugees from Russia in the late nineteenth century, with the start of the civil war in 2011, Syrians fled the country to seek refuge elsewhere. In this work, Mohamad Hafez draws attention to Damascus, the capital of Syria and his hometown until the civil war began. An audio recording made by the artist during his last visit before the crisis captures the peaceful sounds of the city, including a call to prayer (athan) from the city's Great Mosque, children playing, and people conversing in a café. Hafez repurposed small objects in an ornate frame that is similar to those he was familiar with from his life in Syria. A surveillance camera and a secret service vehicle parked in front of houses draw attention to the danger looming over the city and the tensions between civilians and the Syrian regime.
• Provenance: Gift of the Barjeel Art Foundation, 2018."
'The problem with, say, Meta, is only partially that Mark Zuckerberg is personally monumentally unsuited to serving as the unelected, unaccountable permanent social media czar for three billion people.
The real problem is that no one should have that job. That job shouldn’t exist. We don’t need to find a better Mark Zuckerberg.
We need to abolish Mark Zuckerberg.'

Imagine if you could rapidly detect COVID-19 in public places by testing the air. Now you can! Researchers have developed a groundbreaking new air monitor that can detect the presence of an infected person in as little as 5 minutes. (1/3) 🧵

Due to technical issues, I find myself half a year late for the mass migration from Twitter to Mastodon. Disappointed with the direction mainstream social media is taking, Mastodon emerges as a refreshing alternative. Its open-source, decentralized nature promotes transparency, while community-driven moderation policies encourage healthy and civilized dialogue. I am eager to give Mastodon a try! 🐘
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
