“In our research we found no age was the right age to be a woman leader. There was always an age-based excuse to not take women seriously, to discount their opinions, or to not hire or promote them. Each individual woman may believe she’s just at the wrong age, but the data make the larger pattern clear. Any age can be stigmatized by supervisors and colleagues to claim that the woman is not valued or is not a fit for a leadership role.”

NYU, ever the ethical beacon, had suspended her for protesting segregation.
“My having gone to Columbia was the greatest blessing that ever happened to me professionally,” she told the National Science and Technology Medals Foundation in 2016. She wasn’t sure she’d have been a National Medal of Science laureate, she said, “if New York University hadn’t decided that I was a bad girl in 1941.”
'Prompted by such legal discrepancies and a growing number of lawsuits around the United States, a group of neurologists, physicians, lawyers and bioethicists is attempting to harmonize state laws surrounding the determination of death.'

Your annual reminder: mid-summer is way too early to get a #flu shot.
Got a press release today from GSK announcing it has started shipping flu vaccine doses. You may start seeing signs in pharmacies about availability soon. Better to be vaxed closer to when flu starts spreading.
Here's a strange insect unknown to most non-entomologists: the pygmy mole cricket. Tridactylidae: Neotridactylus apicalis. I photographed this one at the Stengl Lost Pines field station in Bastrop, Texas.
Say it plainly: TX A&M University torpedoes the hiring of a distinguished professor of #journalism because she's Black and Republicans are a #racist freakshow. https://www.texastribune.org/2023/07/11/texas-a-m-kathleen-mcelroy-journalism/

So yesterday, I got my first wheelchair as a result of complications from long covid (primarily chronic fatigue and breathlessness from walking). It's made a huge difference for me so far even after just one day - previously I wouldn't have been able to walk more than a few minutes without having to stop and rest for twice as long whilst I catch my breath, but yesterday I was out with a friend for FIVE HOURS, and not once did I lose my breath or feel any extra fatigue! I'm so glad I finally stopped trying to just struggle through it and decided to get the chair, as it's making such a positive impact.
To other wheelchair users out there in the Fediverse: I'd be grateful for any advice you're able to offer me as a new wheelchair user. Anything that you think would be helpful to know would be very gratefully received!
