Sickening: "U.S. climate envoy John Kerry ruled out paying into a global fund to help poorer nations stricken by the devastating impacts of the climate emergency, saying that 'under no circumstances' would the White House consider delivering on reparations."
eLife has recently opened applications for their 2023 Ben Barres Spotlight Awards: a funding scheme that supports the work of researchers from groups traditionally underrepresented in biology and medicine and countries with limited funding.
Awards of up to $5,000 are available to authors of Reviewed Preprints in addition to eLife authors.
The deadline for applications is August 8.

Business as usual.
' But Dan Cohn, global energy transition researcher at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, said that the oil industry’s climate plans should not be taken at “face value”.
“They have left no doubt that their pledges were deployed for cynical political purposes, only to be ditched when they no longer suited the industry’s strategic position,” he said.” '

'In order to make the novel into a polyhistorical illumination of existence, you need to master the technique of ellipsis, the art of condensation. Otherwise, you fall into the trap of endless length. Musil’s The Man Without Qualities is one of the two or three novels that I love most. But don’t ask me to admire its gigantic unfinished expanse! Imagine a castle so huge that the eye cannot take it all in at a glance. Imagine a string quartet that lasts nine hours. There are anthropological limits—human proportions—that should not be breached, such as the limits of memory. When you have finished reading, you should still be able to remember the beginning. If not, the novel loses its shape, its “architectonic clarity” becomes murky.'

'Here, using an unbiased proteomics approach, we questioned the relationship between Aβ and age-related protein insolubility. We demonstrate that, in C. elegans, Aβ expression is sufficient to drive proteome-wide protein insolubility.'

Promising news, vivax is the dominant plasmodium species in many regions - including Brazil.
"Here, Hou et al. report encouraging clinical trial results testing the safety and efficacy of two vaccine candidates, both based on the P. vivax Duffy-binding protein region II (PvDBPII). One of the vaccine candidates, an adjuvanted PvDBPII protein vaccine, elicited the strongest antibody responses, particularly when delivered in a delayed dosing regimen."
