'Here, we used CRISPR-based loss-of-function screens to identify a markedly limited set of ISGs that confer interferon-mediated suppression of a model alphavirus, Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV). We show via combinatorial gene targeting that three antiviral effectors—ZAP, IFIT3, and IFIT1—together constitute the majority of interferon-mediated restriction of VEEV, while accounting for < 0.5% of the interferon-induced transcriptome.'
Alright I’m (reluctantly) back and trying out this app.
Might as well start on a high note: the lab has been awarded our first big NSF. Our BRC-BIO grant will support our work using #astrangia to study how variation in multi-partner symbioses affects host immunity. This project also supports undergraduate research experiences for students at TXST and RWU (w/ awesome co-PI Koty Sharp). We’re pretty pumped!

"After getting involved with my postdoctoral association’s advocacy committee, I quickly saw that many incoming postdocs were facing similar troubles. Wanting to do what I could to help, I took on the role of disseminating information about work-life balance and mental health, announcing seminars, meditation sessions, and mental well-being programs."

It's on JAK inhibitors for alopecia - and at the black box safety warning the FDA attached to this entire class of drugs.

"Given the interest in distinguishing between substantive vs. rhetorical references, we asked whether it is possible to identify subsets of the citation literature that are unequally associated with substantive vs. rhetorical references. We then sought to use these as training data to build a scalable model that might indirectly identify substantive vs. rhetorical citations."

@cyrilpedia @NicoleCRust Good find. I have always wondered about this b/c I can barely do 10 minutes of a psychophysics experiment on a good day. I can't even imagine what it's like as a pre-op epileptic with a bunch of hardware in place.
However, site 408 is a major focus of antibodies elicited by SARSCoV2 vaccination of humans with prior SARS-CoV-1 infection.
The differences between image shown here & post immediately above illustrate how profoundly immune imprinting shapes antibody specificity.
At first this seems exciting: imprinting w SARS-CoV-1 followed by boosting w SARS-CoV-2 can elicit antibodies that neutralize sarbecoviruses w have ~76% spike protein identity!
But there are caveats when you dig a bit more deeply…
