Husband: "To be fair I often wish I could yell at someone about physics..."

"Here, we show that key metabolic functions of human hepatocytes are controlled by non-parenchymal cells (NPCs) in their microenvironment. We developed mice bearing human hepatic tissue composed of human hepatocytes and NPCs, including human immune, endothelial, and stellate cells. "

'For an individual academic, the key is to experiment with a platform to get a sense of whether it works for you, and try to understand where the people you want to talk to are gathering, whether they are having the conversations you want to join, and whether those are a reflection of existing networks or involve people you don’t yet know. It’s the connections that are important.'

Yeah, me too, but it seems we are now inhabiting a dystopian science fiction novel

“When I recently saw a video of the buoys installed in the Rio Grande to thwart the passage of migrants, I thought it must be fake. The buoys appear to be deliberately equipped with sharp sawlike sprockets designed to slice up anyone who tries to clamber over them. “Those can’t be real,” I thought. “Even for Texas.””

"The order was in response to a Justice Department objection to the plan, which the government said allowed members of the Sackler family to take advantage of legal protections meant for debtors in “financial distress,” not for billionaires."

Word of the day: "If the traveller had scaled the peak of phonolithic rock - so called because of the xylophonic sound the stones make as they slide away under a climber's feet (...)"

Zoom now wants you to focus on Section 10 of their terms of service where they now say they won't use your calls and other data to train their AI models, but instead, focus on Section 15. Zoom (like most Big Tech ToS) can change those terms at any time,. They laughably say you should "regularly check" their legal pages for those notices and if you don't but keep using the services you've agreed to the changes. These services are unethically deployed technology at their most fundamental level..

'Is Austria the least safe European country? “Yes,” he replies. “While we [Bellingcat] were investigating the Austrians, they were surveilling me and I wasn’t aware of that at the time. They were doing so explicitly at the request of the Russians. That is deep penetration.”

“In the 16th century, corn was much more important than grapes,” he said. “On rock and granite, where corn wouldn’t grow, that’s where they planted vines. Those farmers were much more intelligent. They had a place for corn, a place for cows, a place for vines. Now, vines are everywhere.”

Another immune molecule with a perfectly good day job goes moonlighting in the nervous system:

"CD20 is a mammalian odorant receptor expressed in a subset of olfactory sensory neurons that mediates innate avoidance of predators"

'I decided to put the inspiration question directly to five scientists and five artists. I asked the scientists what work of art inspired them, and the artists what in science inspired them. Their answers, in their own words, are personal, idiosyncratic, and driven by deep curiosity, just like science and art themselves.'

If you're in Madrid, El Greco meets Picasso at the Prado:

"Hay algo muy poco habitual que se está produciendo ahora mismo en Madrid, concretamente en la sala 9B del Museo del Prado. Es como si se entrara en una burbuja donde se está produciendo el inverosímil encuentro entre dos artistas que vivieron en siglos muy distintos."
