“America is entering its most important, pivotal year since 1860, and the U.S. media is doing a terrible job explaining what is actually happening.…
What we call the Republican Party is barely a political party in any sense of the word but a dangerous antisocial movement that has embraced many of the tenets of fascism, from calls for violence to its dehumanizing of ‘others.’”

White supremacy, racially motivated hate crimes, and the murders of racial, religious and sexual minorities don’t happen in a vacuum. They are encouraged, given life, and ultimately driven by leaders who knowingly deploy the terror to advance and increase their own power.

Wrote something for the Guardian about cancer screening today - for those with (undiagnosed) cancer it can save their life. But if vast majority of people screened *don't* have cancer, then it can also strain NHS resources and lead to some people being diagnosed (and worse, treated for) a cancer they do not have.

Increases in screening must come with transparent information & plan for how NHS will deliver it.

'While Aβ is clearly the initiating factor in the context of mutations in the genes encoding APP and, likely, presenilin 1 and presenilin 2, I propose that accumulation of pathogenic forms of tau is not a consequence of Aβ in all cases of sporadic AD'

'From 2016 to 2017, the largest single-year drop in overall cancer mortality so far — 2.2% — was reported, spurred by rapid declines in lung cancer mortality that have been partially attributed to the approval of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and other new targeted therapies'

'Los archivos desclasificados muestran la visión de Washington sobre los acontecimientos que sucedían en Santiago de Chile en las horas previas al quiebre democrático que dio paso a la dictadura de Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990).'

'Using several high-throughput sequencing approaches, we show that the H/ACA complex is recruited to actively transcribed genes genome-wide, where it performs mRNA pseudouridylation. Moreover, we demonstrate that this modification reduces the rate of mRNA translation and that loss of dyskerin-mediated pseudouridylation results in global elevation of protein synthesis.'

George Takei on the Ugly Danger of Scapegoating: “There are few things more terrifying than demagogic populism, sharpened dangerously into authoritarian rule, with minorities left at the mercy of those now in charge of writing and enforcing the laws.”

'Why would blood group make any difference to SARS-CoV-2? Several new studies offer possible explanations. One from Stowell and colleagues, recently published in Blood, suggests that having type A blood makes SARS-CoV-2 “stickier” to host cells.'

'Resistant pathogens killed 1.26mn people in 2019, according to an analysis published in the medical journal The Lancet. “All of modern medicine is upheld by our ability to control infectious disease. If we can’t control infection, we can’t administer chemotherapy, do invasive surgery, and preterm birth becomes really, really challenging and risky”

'But scientists who study viral transmission see another lesson in the pandemic school closures: Had the indoor air been cleaner and safer, they may have been avoidable. The coronavirus is an airborne threat, and the incidence of Covid was about 40 percent lower in schools that improved air quality, one study found.'
