'Resistant pathogens killed 1.26mn people in 2019, according to an analysis published in the medical journal The Lancet. “All of modern medicine is upheld by our ability to control infectious disease. If we can’t control infection, we can’t administer chemotherapy, do invasive surgery, and preterm birth becomes really, really challenging and risky”

'But scientists who study viral transmission see another lesson in the pandemic school closures: Had the indoor air been cleaner and safer, they may have been avoidable. The coronavirus is an airborne threat, and the incidence of Covid was about 40 percent lower in schools that improved air quality, one study found.'

'Drought and wildfires across southern Europe this summer are the most overt signs of a complex and entrenched water scarcity problem that is becoming more severe as the climate changes. “There is no country in Europe that can pretend to be shielded,” said Xavier Leflaive, who leads the water team in the OECD’s environment directorate.'

'Sixty years ago, in the summer of 1963, a four-story townhouse on West 130th Street in Harlem became the headquarters for what was then the largest civil rights event in American history, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.'
'Scientists are learning that free-floating bits of genetic material found in a pregnant person’s blood may offer a way to detect complications such as preeclampsia and preterm birth—although some experts caution that it’s too early to determine how useful these tests will be in the clinic.'

William Herschel discovers a new moon of Saturn: Enceladus #OTD in 1789, during the first use of his 1.2 m 40-foot telescope, then the largest in the world, at Observatory House in Slough, England.
Its faint apparent magnitude (HV = +11.7) & its proximity to the much brighter Saturn and Saturn's rings make Enceladus difficult to observe from Earth with smaller telescopes. But little was known about it until the two Voyager spacecraft, Voyager 1 & 2, flew by Saturn in 1980 & 1981.
Travelling by train in Europe should be silky smooth.
From pan-European corridors to interregional connections, we have helped build greener and sustainable ways into #Europe.
And we are up for more:
🚊 Today, we earmarked more than €52 million to support the purchase of 37 electric #trains for 13 interregional routes in Romania.
🚆 This month, we allocated €411 million to help build two sections of Spain’s Murcia-Almería high-speed railway.

'A few journals do offer more-accessible solutions to reduce the language gap. The Society for the Study of Evolution launched an English-language mentoring programme to support authors submitting work to the journal Evolution. Authors get to work with an editor assigned to make light-touch edits and discuss ways to improve the clarity of the text.'
'The study found, for example, that almost none of the journals analysed state that they will not reject manuscripts solely on the basis of the quality of English-language writing. Such a lack of support can have serious repercussions for scientists’ careers.'

'The vessel is inscribed, telling us who Sedatus was: a Roman citizen (because of his triple name) and the presiding ritualist who summoned the spirits. Beneath this statement is a long list of spirit names, almost all of which are unknown to archaeologists. But one stands out: ‘Dru’. If we are right in assuming this is an abbreviation of ‘Druid’ (and what else could it be?) then it is the only direct archaeological evidence for the existence of the Druids.'
