@anneurai @biorxivpreprint @cyrilpedia I believe this capability exists already. There's a bell icon with “Follow this preprint" on the preprint's main page. The pop-up says “You can now receive automatic notifications when a preprint is revised, withdrawn, commented on, peer reviewed, or published in a journal.” I haven't tried it out though!
“The survival rate in the United States, where around 22 percent of patients die every year, is the lowest in the industrialized world,” says Leonard Stern. “The mortality in Japan is only 5 to 6 percent per year, and in Western Europe it’s in the range of 9 to 12 percent per year. So what is the difference? Well, for a start, most dialyzing in the United States is done for profit, and the for-profit survival is always less than the not-for-profit.”

John Locke was born #OTD in 1632. He developed an alternative to the Hobbesian state of nature and asserted a government could be good only if it received the consent of the governed and protected the natural rights of life, liberty, and estate. via @wikipedia

Idea for @biorxivpreprint: could one sign up to receive an alert when a preprint is either published in a journal, or e.g. after one year?
This would be great to follow work just outside one's field, where the most complete/final piece would be of higher interest than the earliest version.
'Kidneys even have a sense of smell. To sift hundreds of blood and urine chemicals on the fly, expelling some and husbanding others in precise quantities, kidneys employ odor receptors similar to those found in the nose. “The kidney is sniffing the urine and the blood plasma as they go by,” says Jennifer Pluznick, associate professor of physiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, who discovered the organ’s olfactory gifts. “The kidney’s attention to detail is astounding. I’m convinced it has many other long-held secrets which are waiting to be discovered.”

'The pigment cells of the sea urchin were also found to be similar to immune and neural cell types in the sea star. Based on the genes shared between them, Meyer et al. propose that pigment cells have a dual role (immune and neural) in sea urchin larvae, while these functions are exerted by two separate cell types in sea stars (Figure 1B).'

'Contrary to maternal antibodies, maternal microchimeric cells (MMc) show a high longevity, as they can persist in the offspring until adulthood. Recent evidence highlights that MMc leukocytes promote neonatal immunity against early-life infections in mice and humans.'

'The number of people employed in life sciences in Ireland has surged by 80 per cent to almost 100,000 over the past decade on the back of almost $15bn in capital investment in the sector. Last year a record 301,475 people worked at multinationals, which paid 86 per cent of all corporate taxes received in the country of 5mn people.'

'The “pooled fund” is designed to reduce the high costs of developing new treatments. It would do so partly by increasing the number of experimental drugs being tested, raising the chances that some will succeed. It would also reduce the risks of unsuccessful new products by bringing in capital from non-profit backers who do not seek financial returns.'

Did my periodic check in on #Twitter / #X and saw a bunch of posts saying killing Canada's carbon tax would save people money.
So here is my periodic reminder that carbon REBATES exist.
For my household, at least, getting rid of the carbon tax would end up costing us money. (We get a bit more in rebates than we pay in tax, both directly and indirectly.)
Your mileage may vary, of course.
Here's a calculator to figure out your own household's costs & rebate:
'To add insult to injury, the bot is being trained on pirated copies of my books. Now, really! How cheap is that? Would it kill these companies to shell out the measly price of 33 books? They intend to make a lot of money off the entities they have reared and fattened on my words, so they could at least buy me a coffee.'

'Why would blood group make any difference to SARS-CoV-2? Several new studies offer possible explanations. One from Stowell and colleagues, recently published in Blood, suggests that having type A blood makes SARS-CoV-2 “stickier” to host cells.'
'A few journals do offer more-accessible solutions to reduce the language gap. The Society for the Study of Evolution launched an English-language mentoring programme to support authors submitting work to the journal Evolution. Authors get to work with an editor assigned to make light-touch edits and discuss ways to improve the clarity of the text.'
