* the fact that few people do might explain why things are in such a state.
"For an enslaved person, running away carried enormous risk—most fugitives were caught and returned or died in the process. Running away with a child made a successful journey to freedom all the more improbable. Running away with four children would have seemed like a suicide mission. But Henson was determined."

My answer? Bend over backward to fund a more diverse range of people and ideas, even deliberately including ideas that are currently perceived as unpopular, unworkable, obscure, and the like. After all, many scientific discoveries can be traced back to origins that didn’t seem promising — like CRISPR, which began with a Spanish study on salt-loving archaebacteria in 1993 — or even to ideas that are actively opposed by the establishment.
To be sure, the success rate of this approach might be low. But if we funded 10,000 people who looked like a younger Karikó, and only one of them did something that would have the impact of her mRNA research, that would be well worth it.

Let's hope he follows through:
'Tax breaks for foreign residents in Portugal are “no longer justified”, the prime minister, Antonio Costa, has declared, promising to close the scheme for new applicants in 2024 after it stoked housing prices in one of western Europe’s poorest nations.'
NEW: Food prices in Europe have been soaring. Earlier this year, the Austrian government said it would build a price database to let people compare costs at different supermarkets. It said this would take months to make and only include a small number of product categories.
Within 2 hours, @badlogic had built a first prototype, pulling the data from supermarket's websites, and open sourced the project. Now Heisse Preise lists 177,000 products from 10 chains.
The transparency has allowed prices to be compared: and the results appear to show supermarkets are watching each other and adjusting their prices based on others. The competition authority is investigating and already said new laws should make supermarkets publish proper APIs with full item data

"One of my hobbies is reading really old scientific papers. When I realized that uridine in RNA sets off immune cells, resulting in inflammation and interferon production, I wondered whether anyone had noticed this before. So I went back to the literature. Sure enough, I found a 1963 paper in which the authors reported that RNA isolated from mammalian cells does not induce the production of interferon (5). However, when the RNA was treated with nitrous acid, which deaminates all of the cytidines to uridines, it induced interferons. It gave me great pleasure to see that these researchers had stumbled upon this observation years before."
I'm very glad to see this paper out! @Phylogenetrips has done amazing work on detecting positive selection taking into account population variation in a phylogenetic framework. #phylogenomics #MolecularEvolution #NaturalSelection https://biologists.social/@biorxiv_evobio/111169917451799911

What was #ElonMusk’s strategy for #Twitter?
A year after the world's richest man acquired the #SocialMedia platform, a #GamePlan published by a fired #Trump White House staffer provides a clue.
"The three texts were sent on April 4, 2022. In the nearly 18 months since then, many of the decisions #Musk made after he bought Twitter appear to have closely followed that #RoadMap, up to and including his ongoing attacks against the ADL..."

“The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist: a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain.” — Ursula K. Le Guin

EU users would then have to pay $ 168 a year if they don't want to give up their fundamental right to privacy on Facebook and Instagram. This move is inacceptable.
