'The long-term persistence of a virus depends on the continual availability of newly susceptible individuals through either birth or the loss of immunity that was originally conferred through prior infection or vaccination. Loss of immunity can result from limited host immune memory or from alterations to the viral genome, often referred to as immune or vaccine ‘escape’ mutations. Thadani and colleagues’ focus is on viral mutations that destabilize the binding of ‘neutralizing’ antibodies to the virus (Fig. 1); however, other modes of immune evasion are possible'
"But what makes something hard to discover? I don't mean impossible to discover—you can't see the rings of Saturn without a telescope, for example. I mean cases where it seems like we have everything we need to make a discovery, and yet we take centuries to make it. Why does that happen?"

"Broadly protective vaccines, potentially given mucosally (e.g. intranasally) are urgently needed for SARS-CoV-2."
"Pregnancy confers partner-specific protection against complications in future pregnancy that parallel persistence of fetal microchimeric cells (FMcs) in mothers after parturition. We show that preexisting FMcs become displaced by new FMcs during pregnancy and that FMc tonic stimulation is essential for expansion of protective fetal-specific forkhead box P3 (FOXP3)–positive regulatory T cells (Tregcells)."

"The knob interaction with SARS-CoV-2 spike was revealed by electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry and established ultralong CDR H3-derived knobs as the smallest known recombinant independent antigen-binding fragment"

"Avoiding heated discussions seems to have been an explicit policy rather than an inadvertent omission. In 1950, for example, the ‘News and Views’ column informed readers that a recent article by Julian Huxley on Soviet genetics ‘could clearly not be allowed to become the subject of debate in the correspondence columns of this journal’—a sentiment that would have seemed very odd to anyone who remembered Nature under Lockyer or Gregory."

'Some Black Southerners, especially those who survived attacks or witnessed the violence firsthand, decided that they couldn’t bear the extreme risk of simply exercising their franchise. Bordewich includes some heart-rending testimony from freedmen who were too terrified to go to the ballot box. As one Black man put it, “I had to deny voting to save myself.”'

Transparent peer review, steampunk version:
"In the early nineteenth century, French journals such as the Annals de Chimie sometimes included essays evaluating recent papers released by the Academie des Sciences. In 1831, inspired by those French essays, the English polymath William Whewell (1794–1866) made a proposal to his fellow members of the Royal Society of London: that papers submitted to the Philosophical Transactions should be sent to two Fellows, who would then write a report about the paper. The signed report would be published in the Royal Society’s new journal, the Proceedings of the Royal Society of London."
"In fact, if you ask me, the Nobel announcement sold Goldin a bit short by failing to note her hugely important contributions beyond the issue of women’s work. In particular, it didn’t mention her work on inequality more broadly, notably her role in documenting the sudden and drastic decline in inequality that took place in the 1940s, creating the middle-class society I grew up in (which has now been destroyed)."

Edward Emerson Barnard is first to discover a comet by photographic means #OTD in 1892.
In 1892 Barnard made observations of a nova and was the first to notice the gaseous emissions, thus deducing that it was a stellar explosion. The same year he also discovered Amalthea, the fifth moon of Jupiter. He was the first to discover a new moon of Jupiter since Galileo Galilei in 1609. This was the last satellite discovered by visual observation. via @wikipedia

If you have an existing blog, just jump to the Settings >>> Discussion step.
Be aware that what gets rendered to Mastodon is somewhat limited. For instance if you have images in your post it may not be what you want.
@mastodonmigration @mastodonmigration.wordpress.com agree this is an excellent feature and also it's supremely easy to implement for any existing blog.
One thing I can't figure out (and may not be possible) is how to edit how the bio of the blog account displays on Mastodon. I'm going to screenshot yours to indicate what I mean.
I appreciate the handle can't be changed for a free Wordpress account, but how do I change the logo & can I add a description?
So this is very very cool!
By now you may have heard that Wordpress blogs can attach to Mastodon. Yesterday Wordpress announced that ALL accounts can enable an ActivityPub interface to the Fediverse.

1. “Imagine we land a space probe on one of Jupiters’ moons, take up a sample of material, and find it is full of organic molecules. How can we tell whether those molecules are just randomly assembled goo or the outcome of some evolutionary process taking place on the planet?”
