"A neuroscientist whose studies undergird an experimental Alzheimer’s drug was “reckless” in his failure to keep or provide original data, an offense that “amounts to significant research misconduct,” an investigation by his university has concluded."

Science in Portugal never recovered from the Troika. According this piece in Expresso (a credible newspaper) public investment has now regressed to 1991 levels.

"Os números são inequívocos: se em 2010 a despesa pública em investigação e desenvolvimento chegou a 0,54% do PIB, em 2023 não ultrapassa os 0,32% — um valor inferior ao registado em 1991 e que representa menos de metade da média atual da OCDE."

"What’s most important is that these models ensure equitable access to these treatments for any eligible patient. The tens of thousands of people with sickle cell should all have the same opportunity as Carter: to wake up one day and feel what it’s like to not be in pain. Equitable access is also what matters for the future of the technological revolution brewing in medicine. After all, what good are miracle cures if only the few can get them?"

"Altogether, these data demonstrate that MMRd in these models is not sufficient to increase immunogenicity or sensitivity of tumors to ICB, alone or in combination with chemotherapy, in stark contrast to previous reports in cell-line transplant models"

"Importantly, being an author is not only about credit but also about accountability. Typically, an author will be accountable for the quality and integrity of their own contribution, but also for the work as a whole by ensuring that questions arising post-publication are investigated thoroughly and that materials and data remain available."

Until I worked on this piece, I had no idea how out of control blood pressure still is for most people. Estimates are that only one fifth of those with high blood pressure manage it effectively. New RNA drugs that may only require dosing two to four times a year could really help, but at what cost? My latest Clinical Pipeline column.

"We found that pDCs express the IgA-specific Fc receptor, FcαR , and there was a striking ability of IgA1 autoantibodies to synergize with IgG in RNA-containing ICs to generate robust pDC IFNα responses."

The Ants Who Build Barns for their Livestock:

Everyone knows ants are excellent little architects building homes of leaves, silk, or paper (an "ant carton" similar to material made by wasps) & of course, homes in soil or tree cavities.

But, some ants also build homes for their livestock. Little brown ants who live in English Oaks build barns out of moss to house their favorite aphids & accompany their heard to & from the pasture each night. (the pasture is in the tree)

"That lack of surprise is the scar tissue that Black Americans have built up — the knowledge that the worst is always possible. The mind and spirit continually make space for it, forever hoping, but preparing contingencies for hope’s inevitable betrayal."
