'A study published in 2020, which drew together multiple pieces of research to track the health of almost 50,000 over-65s, showed the incidence rate of new cases of dementia in Europe and North America had dropped 13 per cent per decade over the past 25 years — a decline that was consistent across all the studies.'

A new episode of the EMBO podcast is out. I spoke with Hsiao-Han Chang, Gytis Dudas, and Hedvig Tamman about viruses, hosts, spillovers, public health... And also starting a new lab, the challenges of mobility, mentorship, and Die Hard Dracula.

“Even people who are really knowledgeable and who have a lot of experience out in the field were surprised to see how fast these forests were going down the drain,” says ecophysiologist and Annual Review of Plant Biology author Henrik Hartmann.

Academic rankings: The tide begins to turn universityworldnews.com/post.p

Great piece by Chris Brink about academia's increasingly critical stance toward university rankings.

Brink discusses the @tweetsunl expert group report on rankings (universiteitenvannederland.nl/) and points out that UNL "is the first national association of universities that has moved beyond rhetoric towards action to counteract the well-known concerns about rankings".

It has been a few years that I have been this excited about work coming from our lab! Our latest preprint:

rests on a collaboration with Carsten Duch in Mainz:

enb-idn.biologie.uni-mainz.de/

and describes #neuroscience experiments on a type of #motorlearning in #Drosophila that was first described in 1991:

Now, we present which genes are required in which neurons for this type of learning to take place.

"Briefing documents released 27 October suggest that FDA examiners have zeroed in on this possibility, and it is slated to become a key discussion point when advisors meet to discuss the risks and benefits of exa-cel next week.

In particular, the FDA flagged two potential shortcomings in assays that Vertex and CRISPR Therapeutics used to determine exa-cel’s risk of causing off-target changes"

"Yet, resident and circulating Treg had distinct TCR repertoires, and each LN contained exclusive clonal subpopulations of resident Treg. Our results demonstrate that, similar to conventional T cells, Treg can form resident memory-like populations in LNs after adaptive immune responses"

"Because of the attritional nature of contemporary peer review (and the level of aggression frequently encountered), successes in both papers and grants are nowadays likely to be met not with celebration, but a sense of exhausted relief. The pleasure is always fleeting."

This is so cool! There is an annual mass #biodiversity experiment in Danish schools, which this year involved 30,000 kids collecting + examining samples of moss + lichen. Only 5% have been examined so far but they've already discovered 5 species of water bear unknown to science.

'AI-enabled drug discovery has yet to prove itself in the clinic. And on top of that, companies have to worry about intellectual property — regarding not only the drugs but also the discovery methods. “Everybody patents molecules,” says Alex Aliper, the president of Insilico Medicine, headquartered in New York City and Hong Kong. “For algorithms, it’s a choice.”

Happy to introduce our latest gizmo from the lab: pLSM !
biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

A big shoutout to our brilliant grad student, Yannan Chen, who led this work.

In short, pLSM is a plug-and-play, cost-effective and easy-to-scale light sheet microscopy platform. More than 20 times cheaper, with imaging quality comparable to high-end systems.
