"Ultimately, however, Factor VIII killed many of those who infused it in the 1970s and 1980s. For decades, British officials and ministers claimed that the contaminated blood scandal was a tragedy no one could have prevented: when haemophiliacs began to be infected, hepatitis C hadn’t even been named, and HIV/Aids was entirely unknown; new protocols were introduced once the dangers became clear. According to Margaret Thatcher, ‘all patients received the best treatment available in light of the medical knowledge at the time.’ These claims were not true."

"Factor VIII concentrate was developed later in the decade. Production involved pooling many batches of donated blood, then fractionating it. The Factor VIII was freeze-dried and packed into bottles. Haemophiliacs could get it out of the fridge themselves, mix it and inject it to stop bleeds. It was a miracle treatment: in 1962 the median life expectancy for severe haemophiliacs in Britain was 37; by 1980 it was practically normal."

Weekend #Plankton #Factoid 🦐🦠
A bit of a strange one. Rotifers can increase #microplastics particles by their feeding mechanism. #Rotifers feed by a ciliated corona, which looks like a wheel spinning (thus "wheeled animacules") into a pharynx with calcified trophi. When plastic particles are eaten, they are broken up into smaller bits. Rotifers are very common in #freshwater where most microplastics are deposited, potentially making the situation worse. #zooplankton

"Not everyone who develops a psychiatric disorder later in life will also develop dementia, but given how often the two types of conditions occur together, Dr. Garcia-Ptacek advised that doctors order cognitive testing for older adults with new psychiatric symptoms, as a precaution."

According to Leibniz's notebooks, a critical breakthrough occurred #OTD in 1675, when he employed integral calculus for the 1st time to find the area under the graph of a function y = f(x). He introduced several notations used to this day, for instance the integral sign ∫ (∫f(x)dx)
representing an elongated S, from the Latin word summa, & the d used for differentials (dy/(dx), from the Latin word differentia. Leibniz did not publish anything about his calculus until 1684.

"So the foundations of the entire Cassava Alzheimer's program are shaky. And as you'll see from this, that's not the end of it. Thirty-four papers by Cassava-associated scientists have come under scrutiny for research irregularities, and this led to a petition filing to the FDA asking that the company be investigated and their clinical trials halted."
"Although my letter precedes the furore ignited by Michelle Donelan’s missive to UKRI raising her concerns about tweets by members of Research England’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Advisory Group, it touches on a related issue: the use and interpretation of evidence in political discourse on matters that are central to research and higher education."

(settler colonialism🧵)
The French laws that applied in Algeria discriminated against Indigenous nations and privileged the white Europeans rights over those of the majority Indigenous nations. In fact, different laws applied to Muslims in Algeria, whom for example were not allowed to vote, whereas white French people were allowed to.
(Settler colonialism 🧵)
5M indigenous Algerians were killed and crimes including torture, murder, rape, displacement, nuclear tests, land theft, and denial of the most basic rights were committed.
Many Algerian cities saw their names changed to be “Francized”. E.g. the name of the capital of Algeria, Algiers (in Arabic Al-Jazaïr) was changed into La Pointe-Pescade.
The main objective of settler colonialism is to totally erase the culture of indigenous’ people and destroy their legacy.
An example of settler colonialism can be found in the History of Algeria. Between 1830 and 1962, Algeria was considered a “French Department.”
Algeria was annexed and made officially a part of France in 1848. The French’s aim was to make Algeria a part of France by erasing the Indigenous’ rights and displacing them from their lands. Atrocious crimes were committed by French colonial authorities in Algeria throughout the 132 years of colonization.
