'Every plant biologist has a story (usually multiple stories) of attempting to educate an animal biologist who does not know that plants have microtubules or cells or DNA. I once listened to a radio show about Darwin and his fascination with plants. My soul almost left my body when I heard the guest explain that Darwin would visit the plants in his greenhouse daily and “talk to them as if they were alive.”

"By analysing single-cell sequencing data from patients receiving cell therapy products that are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration or are in clinical studies, we identify the presence of HHV-6-super-expressor CAR T cells in patients in vivo."

'What looks like the aftermath of a war zone is in fact an urban environmental disaster of allegedly man-made origin, which has forced an estimated 55,000 people to permanently evacuate their homes in the seaside city of Maceió, north-eastern Brazil.'

"This paper shows unique evidence on multidimensional inequality during Sweden’s COVID-19 pandemic, along four different social gradients. We consider nine diverse outcomes, which are rarely considered together and in the same statistical framework, given existing disciplinary boundaries. With few exceptions, direct and indirect burdens of the pandemic fell heavier upon more disadvantaged social groups."

'Deforestation in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil fell to a five-year low, the country’s National Institute of Space Research announced on Thursday, a sign that Brazil, which has the biggest share of tropical forest in the world, was making progress on its pledge to halt all deforestation by the end of the decade.'

The remarkable string of days with record low #Antarctic sea ice extent is coming to an end (started in April/May), as the rate of decline has slowed (melt season - austral spring). 2016 is the record low for November and December.

'More than half of all British defence exports go to the Middle East – but to Saudi Arabia rather than Israel. Human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, accuse BAESystems of being party to Saudi war crimes in Yemen, where BAE-supplied (and serviced) fighters have bombed schools and hospitals.'

Interesting comparing intramural vs extramural funding at the NIH:

"When adjusted for investment, extramural research excels at producing scholarly outputs such as publications and citations, which are standard metrics in academic assessment. In contrast, intramural research, whether basic or applied, stands out for producing research that influences subsequent clinical studies, aligning with its agency mission."

"This week, Suella Braverman has undermined the operational independence of the police, angered politicians and communities on all sides in Northern Ireland, stoked the potential for unrest caused by the far right and antisemites at tomorrow’s pro-Palestinian march, earned a rebuke from Winston Churchill’s grandson, and so much more besides – and all out of sheer respect for the dead we commemorate this weekend and every Armistice Day."
