This morning I had the honor of addressing the Macquarie Uni School of Natural Sciences at their annual research retreat.

This afternoon they turned me loose in the glorious Lane Cove National Park, where had I met this delightful fellow. A cockatoo, of course, was the one who located him for me. Cockatoo was absolutely losing his shit even though echidnas are harmless to cockatoos.

For the #FolktaleWeek2023 prompt ink I chose a story from Japanese folklore of the suzuri no tamashii. This is my hand-printed lino block print of the Japanese yokai, a sort of supernatural spirit. Specifically it’s what’s called a tsukumogami, a type of spirit which can arise from an object which is used for 100 years, and then it comes alive.

It was an incredible privilege to attend this workshop on cancer immunotherapy organized by Tasuku Honjo & Antonio Coutinho and hosted by the Fondation des Treilles in Provence.

I put together a brief meeting report for the foundation, you can read it here 👇

“…violence in the #WestBank is also spiking. Attacks on Palestinians by the Israeli military and settlers are up, according to the UNOCHA, which estimates more than 170 Palestinians have been killed and more than 2,600 injured in the West Bank since the war began.

…Abuhejleh says that when he tries to get to his olive trees, the war is the reason Israeli soldiers point to for stopping him. He is convinced they are using the war as an excuse to seize Palestinian land.”

5. Finally, on Monday Nov 27th at 11 AM at the University of Melbourne I'm giving the Crisis lecture at a venue that I believe is public or at least quasi-public. I'll post a correction if I hear otherwise.

"We asked students several questions about the scheduling structure, frequency, and helpfulness of their individual meetings with their advisors. Frequent meetings were a positive predictor of nearly every aspect of well-being and productivity measured in the survey."

"As the scale of the disaster gradually became clear, governments made some paltry support available to affected haemophiliacs. But successive governments, Conservative and Labour, refused to contemplate paying compensation or admitting responsibility. Many relevant papers have been destroyed, and victims’ medical records lost or falsified. When in the early 1990s a group of HIV-positive victims agreed to settle a case they’d brought against the government in exchange for ex-gratia payments, they had to sign away their right to sue again over any related medical problem, though officials knew what most of the litigants didn’t: that almost all those who had used unheated Factor VIII had also been exposed to hepatitis C."

"Chronic viral infections are known to accelerate immune aging and to induce immune senescence (21, 22). We have shown that among 206 viruses with human tropism, only CMV seropositivity was associated with senescence of CD8+ T cells in patients with aNSCLC."

Moby-Dick, a novel by Herman Melville, is published in the USA #OTD in 1851.

Melville first proposed the British publication in a June 27, 1850, letter to Richard Bentley, London publisher of his earlier works. On July 3, 1851, Bentley offered Melville £150 and "half profits", that is, half the profits that remained after the expenses of production and advertising. Only on September 12 was the Harper publishing contract signed. via @wikipedia

"UK to loosen post-Brexit chemical regulations further"

The question in my mind is how easy it will be to undo such regulatory relaxations when the UK or its successor states prepare to rejoin the EU.

Dear @EU_Commission,

If your best effort at regulating surveillance capitalists results in “give us €9.99/month not to see ads or use for ‘free’ with ads¹”, you should all probably resign and go hide your heads in shame.

And maybe watch my EU Parliament before you do:
