“Most great ideas, or a lot of them anyway, were thought at the time to be rubbish, and you were reckoned an idiot for having them.
This was true of stupid ideas too.
Telling them apart was the tricky bit.”
Mick Herron – Slough House

"There is no point in pretending that a man who believes that any election he loses is rigged, that the judicial system is rotten and corrupt, and that his political enemies belong in jail, is a believer in democracy. As Robert Kagan persuasively sets out in the Washington Post, Trump would come into office with a plan and a team to execute it. His aim is dictatorship."

"Here, we combine a stationary-phase screening method with deep learning-powered virtual screens and toxicity filtering to discover compounds with lethality against metabolically dormant bacteria and favorable toxicity profiles."

"These crises are not about the planet going haywire. They are crises caused by failures to assign and enforce social responsibilities. And the wealthiest, most powerful and most capable societies that have ever existed on this planet are behaving as if they owe nothing for what they have gained at the expense of imperiling life on Earth."

'Who among us can honestly say we are capable of parsing a WhatsApp message from Dominic Cummings dated 23 August 2020 that reads: “I also must stress I think leaving Hancock in post is a big mistake – he is a proven liar who nobody believes or shd believe on anything, and we face going into autumn crisis with the cunt in charge of NHS still.”

"In particular, our results show that AlphaFold predictions are not better representations of the contents of a crystal than the models deposited in the PDB, as the deposited models agree much more closely with experimental data where the predicted and deposited models differ."

'The chaos at the heart of Britain’s handling of Covid-19 has been laid bare in recent weeks, with testimonies describing a “toxic” culture in Downing Street and how Johnson was “bamboozled” by scientific data.'

'Yet it is troubling that Germany, of all places, should frame antisemitism as an imported problem. Crime statistics show that a vast majority of antisemitic crimes are committed by right-wing extremists and not by Islamists, let alone migrants or Muslims.'

German physicist Wolfgang Paul died #OTD in 1993.

He co-developed the non-magnetic quadrupole mass filter which laid the foundation for what is now called an ion trap. He shared one-half of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1989 for this work with Hans Georg Dehmelt; the other half of the Prize in that year was awarded to Norman Foster Ramsey, Jr. He humorously referred to Wolfgang Pauli as his imaginary part if their surnames were considered as complex numbers.

BBC News: UK Covid inquiry: Boris Johnson to apologise at Covid inquiry but defend big calls - BBC News

He'll just lie. He's a liar and he's going to lie incessantly. It would be wonderful to see him taken down a peg or several, but I'm not confident.
