“It is a form of social justice,” Anne Hidalgo announced on Friday of the plan to deliberately target the richest drivers to tackle the climate breakdown and air pollution. “This is about very expensive cars, driven by people who today have not yet made the changes to their behaviour that have to be made [for the climate].”
"BBC film-maker and photographer Sam Rowley captured this astonishing scene of mice apparently squabbling for dropped crumbs after he had spent five cold nights lying flat on a London Underground platform."

Ukrainian-born Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector died #OTD in 1920.
Her first novel, Perto do coração selvagem, published when she was 24 years old, won critical acclaim for its sensitive interpretation of adolescence. In her later works, such as A maçã no escuro, A paixão segundo G.H., Água viva, A hora da estrela, her characters, alienated and searching for meaning in life, gradually gain a sense of awareness of themselves & accept their place in an arbitrary, yet eternal, universe.
"Hoje justifica-se dizer que a esquerda portuguesa não está a prestar atenção à outra metade da lição das eleições espanholas, a saber: que foi possível extrair uma vitória por uma unha negra principalmente por causa da capacidade de cada partido progressista em mobilizar ou segurar o seu eleitorado, demonstrando capacidade de trabalhar em conjunto com os outros partidos progressistas no futuro."
"We therefore developed spatial transcriptomics for variable, diversity, and joining (VDJ) sequences (Spatial VDJ), which spatially resolves full-length IG and TR transcripts, tissue morphology, and the whole transcriptome simultaneously in human tissue."

'Harry Noller had earlier worked in my protein–rRNA interaction lab in West Berlin in 1975 during a sabbatical year when he also, with considerable foresight, learned the new DNA sequencing technique in Fred Sanger's lab in Cambridge. He generously invited me back to Santa Cruz for annual working visits and on one of the last visits in the early 1980s, while staying with Harry, the phone would often ring around midnight followed by long animated conversations on rRNA structure and, since I knew most of the rRNA nucleotides by number, I could follow some of the discussions. When asked: why always at midnight? Harry’s reply was essentially: “I think Carl sits through the evenings with rRNA secondary structure maps, and a bottle of whisky, and by around midnight he needs someone to talk to.”
"To avoid this, Paris is taking a lead from Vienna, where over 60 per cent of inhabitants live in subsidised housing. Nearly one-quarter of Parisian homes inside the Périphérique ring road are now social housing, up from 13 per cent in 2001. The mayoralty aims to reach 30 per cent by 2035, plus another 10 per cent of “affordable” homes, meaning one-fifth below market prices"
I had no idea it came from Yugoslavia:
"El 4 de mayo de 1980, mientras Yugoslavia enterraba a su presidente, Josip Broz Tito, un equipo de investigadores de la pequeña empresa farmacéutica Pliva ultimaba en Zagreb el desarrollo de la que sería la mayor aportación del país a la medicina mundial: la azitromicina."
"After decades of steady environmental degradation in Xochimilco, Mexico wanted to know how many axolotls remained in the species’ last stronghold. Axolotls were of deep cultural importance, a feature of the region’s traditional diet and cosmology. And laboratory biologists all over the world, who for more than a century had used axolotls to study tissue regeneration, worried that their animals were becoming inbred, without a wild population from which to draw new bloodlines."

'Yet it is troubling that Germany, of all places, should frame antisemitism as an imported problem. Crime statistics show that a vast majority of antisemitic crimes are committed by right-wing extremists and not by Islamists, let alone migrants or Muslims.'

“When people think of how invasive plant species spread, they might assume species are moving because of birds or the wind dispersing seeds,” says Evelyn M. Beaury, lead author of the paper on horticulture & invasive species, as well as a postdoctoral researcher at Princeton who completed this research as an extension to her graduate studies..“But commercial nurseries that sell 100s of different invasives are actually the primary pathway of invasive plant introduction”
