John Greenleaf Whittier American poet and advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States was born #OTD in 1807. At age 19 he submitted his poem “The Exile’s Departure” to the abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison for publication in the Newburyport Free Press, and it was accepted. Garrison encouraged other poetic contributions from Whittier, and the two men became friends and associates in the abolitionist cause.

William Thomson, Baron Kelvin Irish engineer, mathematician, and physicist died #OTD in 1907.
Absolute temperatures are stated in units of kelvin in his honour. While the existence of a coldest possible temperature, known as absolute zero, was known prior to his work, Kelvin is known for determining its correct value as approximately −273.15 degrees Celsius. Kelvin's work in thermodynamics led to the idea that energy can not pass spontaneously from a colder object to a hotter object.

'Federal research agencies provide the primary source of support for the majority—56%—of U.S.-based biological and biomedical postdocs, whereas only 17% are primarily funded by institutions. “What I personally hope is there's a call for institutions to offer more support to postdocs,” says working group member Chrystal Starbird, who started her post as an assistant professor of biochemistry and biophysics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in February after encountering many challenges during her postdoc years. “I think institutions have forgotten that they can also have some buy in and some commitment to postdocs as well.”

Really important study that I hope those in charge of decisions re Covid19 vaccine campaigns pay heed to: data from >10.5 million people shows that case Fatality rate for Covid highest in unvax esp older and lowest in fully vax but significantly increases to after 6 months post booster!
