I had a really great time playing ~5 min of Minecraft last night. I am definitely going to start a new game tonight.
My biggest challenge was building a roof on my hideout. I ran out of time so I walled myself into a cave I dug for the night. If I’m being honest I also wasted time on frivolous things like picking berries and hunting foxes. This tells me Minecraft is realistic. Without society and many support systems I would probably die because it’s winter and i have a bunch of delicious berries but no shelter or warmth.:)
I want to play with my siblings an RPi LAN setup won’t do. I tried a “Free” private server but the catch is you have to renew it every few days. It looks like hosting is cheap and I could get a a 10 player server for around $30 USD per year. There are also free public servers but I’m not sure if they are good for new players.
@derickflorian It was so nice before microsoft took over. Just download the jar and host a server.
Is that no longer possible? Or is your problem that you cannot port forward in your LAN?
@admitsWrongIfProven I just don’t trust myself I guess. Would that involve having a separate router to wall off my network? And doing stuff like fail2ban and disabling login via password to the pi?
I think you can actually host the classic java version or the new “bedrock” edition.
My third thought was there are open source voxel games that I could try and potentially host. Minetest comes up over and over but I really liked Terasology the most from this list: https://opensource.com/alternatives/minecraft
@derickflorian My knowledge is outdated, but back then you could just set minecraft to whitelist. If your router is only forwarding the minecraft port and minecraft is only letting in whitelisted accounts, it should be acceptable for normal security concerns.
If you have a problem with enacting anything i mentioned, i will help. If there is another problem, please state it for i do not see the problem right now.
@admitsWrongIfProven ok, thank you, that makes sense! The only problem is my lack of knowledge so I appreciate you explaining the high level of it. I will dig into it and that sounds like the best option from an overall cost standpoint.

That is a similar thread I am in. As with many projects, the answer depends on what you want to do, what background experience you bring, and the time & money you want to sink into it.
@derickflorian I cannot guarantee a time, but if you want to talk about this please ask, i will see what is possible. Most likely you will suceed on your own, but setting up a minecraft server is something i wanna help with - if microsoft did not make it all that painful ;-)
