Overthinking the technology of Star Trek

In Trek they have those universal translator gizmos. How does that work with untranslatable words like names?

Wouldn't it be possible to have a language that is so different in terms of phonemes that they can't pronounce your name, so you'd hear them speak perfect RP intercut with pronouncing "Jeff" as "Jermaphonex"?

Maybe it's smart enough to trace the name's etymology, and so translate the name too in your language.
