True self-care is not bath salts and chocolate cake, it’s making the choice to build a life you don’t need to escape from. ~ Brianna Wiest

A few months ago I stopped crossposting from Twitter to Mastodon.

Why?

I discovered (as many of you have) that it's a completely different vibe here. Different people. Different habits. Different interests.

Zero algorithms.

And people here are more interested in deeper conversations.

Combined with the extra characters and (gasp!) actual editing capabilities, I'm making an effort to post unique content here that isn't just copied from Twitter.

LET'S GO!

@quincy @atomicpoet
Yeah, the issue is that human psychology is often the weakest link in a system. People often rely on technical solutions that provide *options* for people to avoid such takeovers, but most people follow the path of least resistance and end up in catch-22 lock-ins (no dig on them though, life is hard and you can't be watchful in every system you interact with).

The best things we can do is keep a look out for such measures and sound alarm bells early, intercept the lock-ins before they set in, when there starts to be a potential for it.

For eg., I'm glad to see that everyone's spreading around messages about the diversity of insances, and successfully getting people to join an array of different instances, in this migration. We need to keep that up, even if we're outnumbered by people who just want a birdsite clone and don't understand the importance of federation and openness. This is the time to keep spreading education and awareness.

Yes, I preferred the pop-up window! Most instances still do that, it's only mastodon.social and a couple other big ones that use this new UI. I find it less convenient, and it also breaks addons like addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firef which redirect on the same page instead of in a pop-up. The add-on makes it almost a frictionless process - click on boost, the page loads in your instance, click on boost again, done. Having to switch tabs, choose the search box, paste the URL in, etc. is more of a mental context switch and feels more involved to me.

@jeffpalmer
Oh, does it pop up even if it doesn't know you're a G user? That's really intrusive. Maybe it's uBlock Origin or Privacy Badger blocking it for me then. (Kinda sad that we have to resort to multi-layered defense just to browse the web, but at least we *have* those available as a choice thanks to the good people that make them available openly.)

@jeffpalmer
This is why I use Firefox with its Multi-Account Containers - my Google account is chained up in its own container cell, so big G can't as easily look over my shoulder at every page I visit.

#TwitterMigration #Mastodon culture and the glorious picture #Captions ...

I had real trouble wrapping my head around this. A lot of the imagery I produce is clearly for sighted people, so it was hard to say what blind people would or could get out of it. How can I explain my pictures?!

But the answer is STORY.

Don't fuss over the visual details "red hair" "left/right" etc. Tell what's going on. It's like going from animation to audiodrama. What's actually IMPORTANT about the picture?

in arabic the letter و plays the role of the oo, u, w sounds in english. so uwu would transliterate to the same letter, ووو, which is the same as www, so via arabic transliteration the world wide web is uwu, و also means "and" so both uwu and www are "and and and", i forgot where i was going with this

I would like to express my deepest appreciation for all the hard work put in by those who develop and run various #fediverse platforms. What a time to be doing what you are doing! :)

Thank you! Take good care of yourselves. ❤️

I've published a build of my stealth game prototype, built with the #GodotEngine 4 beta. There's also a short trailer I threw together, and the source code on GitHub! If anyone has a few minutes to play through it and give feedback that would be very appreciated 😀

long feedback

@IngloGamesDev
I tried it out on Linux. It's pretty cute, and the dialog made me quickly like the characters :)

Gameplay: It's sometimes not clear when to use T vs F. I kept trying to use T on the code-locked safe in the first room, since I thought of it as *using* the code on the safe.
Some ability to turn the fox without needing the mouse would be great, shift-A shift-D or something.
I like the slow escalation of tension, the noisemaker room actually felt thrilling like one of the tricky Portal levels.
I didn't realize that I could get out of traps - maybe I missed an instruction about it, but was confused why the level wasn't restarting.

Technical: There were quite a few random dark square boxes around the screen, and they kept moving whenever I moved. That was pretty visually noisy and distracting. (I can try and take a screenshot if needed.)
In the noisemaker level, I went into a closet right as a bot was coming nearby, and it got stuck with a ? above its head. The fox was inside the closet, nothing else was happening, and the bot was stuck in place. It moved again when I got out of the closet, cming near and the ? changing to !, but then when I got back in the closet it got stuck like that again. (I quit the game at that point, so have no feedback for parts after that.)

Thanks for sharing your work with us! Looks like it's gonna be a fun game.

@tullis
Do you mean their old verification badge? That was completely arbitrary and upto their decision. You had to be "big enough" and "important enough" in their subjective view, to get a small blue icon next to your name!

@lienrag
Yeah I came across Sengi, but it doesn't work for my instance (Qoto). Apparently some configuration issue, so I'm talking to the admin about it. Thanks for mentioning it!

@sengi_app @freemo
This is probably a busy week of admin-ing, so no urgency on this, just letting you know.

@athulsudheesh
Well, the code segment support isn't great, it looks like. For some reason, it strips out newlines before applying the <pre> tag, so it's mainly only for inline `println("code like this")` or single line codeblocks.

@athulsudheesh
Yep, some do: Qoto, Mathstodon, and types.pl have LaTeX support (maybe others too, these are the ones I know of). Qoto has Markdown support too, not sure if code has actual highlighting or just a <pre> tag.
```
map(1:5) do k
[n for n in 1:k]
end
```

Honestly, with how often purported "modern" "redesign"s mess up the usability of the sites - making pages unlinkable, adding unpreditable latencies, etc. - I'm okay with Amazon sticking to what works, even if it isn't the prettiest thing out there.

@marathon0
I explained in the linked comment, Tootle seems to ignore even basic keyboard commands like arrow keys and pageup/pagedown. But it's really beautifully designed, so I hope it gets some keyboard support in the future, it'll be favourite client then.

- Desktop Linux client first impressions:

:
+ (some) keyboard navigation, (some) customization
- heavy (Electron), little bugs (keyboard scroll-down far enough and it randomly takes you to the top of the timeline)

+ Beautiful visual design, quick buttons for favourites, lists, etc.
- No keyboard navigation, archived project (no updates)

+ Quick to load, everything happens snappily
- pretty barebones, barely any customization
