Hey there!
Project Encephalon is now on Mastodon 😎
We are an international, trainee-led, #nonprofit organization for #neuroscience enthusiasts. We regularly conduct various academic and non-academic neuroscience-related activities while diversity and inclusivity are at the very core. Hence, we have something for every neuroscience enthusiast.
We're a diverse group of students and professionals, all united by a common passion for neuroscience. No matter your background or level of experience, we have a place for you!
Catch a glimpse of our recently published magazine- Neuroletter, containing new articles, comics, and podcasts, by young trainees, for everyone!

is it possible to add alt text to header and profile images for my mastodon and pixelfed profiles? I'm guessing not? #accessibility #mastodon #pixelfed
@freemo that's another reason why I like this instance. Instances should not be responsible for blocking. Individual USERS should be responsible for blocking stuff that they don't want to see.
@freemo
I saw this and a few other conversations like it, and frankly it made me feel okay that these folks are not federated with us - if this kind of toxicity and personal insults are what they jump to when they see a polite attempt to communicate, it's unlikely they bring much of value anyway.
It's true that it can be confusing and a bit more complicated to new people here. But it's also what makes this actually different, something that can be a long term solution. Without the decentralization and federation, this would be just yet another social platform for people to jump on to and see it slowly decay (however well intentioned the creators originally are) and then have to jump ship again. Federation opens up many ways to avoid that, and the complexity is (unfortunately) a necessary price to pay for that.

What does it mean to "know" a programming language? Not a philosophical or gotcha question, I really don't know how to evaluate it.
I haven't written C or Perl in maybe a decade, but used to teach them - do I count those?
I've reluctantly written some Javascript when necessary, by googling every step along the way, and imbibed something about it even if I wasn't trying to.
I "know" Common Lisp in that I can understand its syntax, but know none of its libraries, and wouldn't know what its development workflow looks like.
Let me know if you guys want a tutorial on how to paint your own space shirt!! I took little videos while painting this shirt 💜🌌
Question for #AIArt (and maybe #AIEthics) folks:
Is there an AI art generator out there that's been trained only on images where the artist consented for it to be used for AI training?
#NovelAI famously did not do that, it's not clear what #MidJourney used, and I don't know what other options exist.

Everyone please be aware that the service we used to use that provided tickers went down and doesnt plan to go back up.. This unfortunately slows down the default theme.
As such I switched the default theme to the no-ticket theme and this works just fine. However im not sure it will help for people already signed up on the server.
To fix the problem please go intto your preferences and change the theme to the no-ticket theme.

Just as a different perspective, I used #Mastodon before I actively used #Twitter, and found Twitter pretty confusing and unintuitive when I finally started to actively use it.
I've also found far more interesting people and posts here than on Twitter, mainly bcos the search and the timelines don't try to funnel me into the hype cycle or towards the "most popular". As @ambihelical says, #hashtags - use 'em, a lot! In your profile, in an introductions post, and to search for people. Helps a lot.
@radehi @ner
But my understanding is that the latest version of Mastodon has actual editing of posts (with the history being visible so situations like what @radehi describes can be caught). But #Qoto doesn't run that version yet, nor do most other Mastodon servers.
That's probably why you're seeing conflicting info: a few instances do have an actual Edit, but most of the #Mastoverse is still on "delete and redraft", and will be for some time.
@keyosuke
Maybe you can find new people here with similar interests to you that you can get to know now! You can search for the hashtags of things you're interested in, and find people that way.
Making a post with the hashtag "introductions", with some info on your interests and background, helps as well.
@szhang_ds
Thengai sadham is my favourite! That combination looks super yummy 😋
What I love about #masto is that I've discovered more artists, photographers, writers, poets, historians, archaeologists, heritage experts etc. in the last five days than I have in 10+ years on all the other platforms combined thanks to all the introductions and sharing going on. I always felt that social media was an obligatory part of the job, now it feels like a place to discover a creative world beyond my own field.
@Caroline_Bartma Clicking on their name or profile picture works for me, on the website, but I guess you're asking about the #iOS app. Maybe there's a long-press menu that has that as an option?
