freedom.to seems like it's solving a different problem. I don't need apps blocked, just calls and other notifications completely made silent for a while.

Could you mention what app it is? I was thinking of jury-rigging something with a Tasker-like app (Easer me.ryey.icu/Easer/en/ or Automation server47.de/automation/index.p), but if this app you mentioned is small and unobtrusive enough it could make things easier.

#JuliaLang appreciation post:

Recently I wrote about DataFrames.jl comparing it with my own experiences in :rstats: dplyr and data.table - yjunechoe.github.io/posts/2022

I didn't expect it to leave my R circle, but it made its way into the :julia: community where it sparked some discussion.

To my surprise, the creator (Bogumił Kamiński) reached out about the blog post.
We exchanged long emails where Bogumił told me the context behind some difficult design choices and asked for my(!) suggestions.

@engelbart
Sounds interesting. I wouldn't have time in the next few days either, but maybe the next weekend? Fingers crossed!

twitter escapees staggering into other apps all haggard and chewed up and wild eyed

@engelbart
Oh damn. Those do sound like the signs of software someone set up once and then let bitrot take over.

@engelbart
I haven't tried it yet, what makes it unusable? I'd been looking for an Open replacement for a long time, came to know about a few days ago, and was hoping it would be the one.

@cavar
Took a trip with (extended) family I hadn't seen in a while, because I wanted to reconnect with them. Did my best to be socially engaged and available, even when I wanted to just sit in a corner and get lost in the Fediverse. ☺️

@wjbeaver
1. People have been creating tools and guides to help with this, it's difficult mainly because it's new, and the network effect helps a lot with this too - once people get on here, they want their friends here too and are willing to help them with their onboarding steps.
2. People have been pretty generous about donations so far (in places where the admins have asked for it), and there are an encouragingly high number of people opening up new instances too, avoiding concentrating the pressure on a few overburdened instances.
3. Unclear what complicated questions they mean here. These institutions don't have to run public instances open to everyone, just a place for their own members/employees to toot from and federate with the rest of the 'verse. Just like people have person@organization.org email IDs, let @person@organization.social become a norm too.
4. This is kind of a vague point, and a complicated topic. I'll just say I kind of agree about the echo chamber issue, and that's a big reason I'm on which doesn't defederate on a whim.
5. This is of course to be expected when two populations collide, and such growing pains are a good sign. Generally people have been somewhat respectful and receptive of these norms, and it's likely (imo) that the people who are willing to take up these norms will be the same ones who decide to stick around long term. People who just want a place to yell at the clouds without regard to their environment are unlikely to find as much engagement as they're used to (especially without an algorithm to boost posts drama-baiting posts), and are more likely to move on elsewhere.

@rchhetri
Ah, the famous Fermi's paradox. Though perhaps you meant it as a question about the Fediverse rather than the entirety of the universe 😁

Hi #Mastodon, I’m new and wanted to introduce myself while figuring things out here! I am a #neuroscience PhD student at #UCIrvine. I’m interested in the topics of #aging, #Alzheimer’s, #vascular disease and #memory.
I also happen to make a lot of #SciArt like the one below. Look forward to interacting with you all on here! 😊 🧠

I need an Android widget where, if I click on it, it sets the phone on Do Not Disturb mode for 25 minutes, after which it returns to normal mode until the widget it pressed again.

Is there an existing app that has a feature like this? What is the easiest way to achieve this, (highly) preferably using FOSS tools?

Autistic traits are often submerged under fathoms of criticism, shame, embarrassment and fear, to the point that 'unmasking' becomes impossible, as what on earth remains of whatever is behind the mask?

There's a huge amount of trauma in this.

This reminded me of a couple posts I did a long time ago as "Common phrases in Non-fiction writing, translated": qoto.org/@digital_carver/10535

Your post would fit in well as a third one there.

An interesting thing is that the thread repeatedly talks about user's "happiness" without mentioning what they actually measured and how. Knowing for-profit corporates, "happiness" was most likely measured along some axis where it just so happens to coincide with "tendency to make users addicted and doomscrolling".

Sugar cubes will give me happiness and keep me coming back for more, as long as I don't notice the rot it's creating in me long term.

I know people are giving great advice and linking great articles for those of us new to Mastodon, but here is one I don’t think I’ve seen - flesh out your profile asap. I know this is a more civilized place, but I still don’t like following new accounts on my instance when the profiles are completely empty. You may be missing an opportunity to connect quickly with some like minded folks if we don’t know what you like. #newtomastodon
