Slender Sun Orchids - Thelymitra pauciflora - near Gipsy Point, VIC. Several plants with slightly more mauve flowers growing alongside the 'standard' blue form (+ several hybrids). As is often the case with T. pauciflora I only saw the flowers out on one morning.

@DeepGreenDesign
Hi, a tiny suggestion: if possible, try to remove the "utm_source=Twitter" part of the URL when posting here. It could lead to clicks and views from here being counted as ones from the birdsite, leading to inflated viewcounts that show Twitter as the source in Nature's internal analytics.

@lunarflare
Specifically, the instance ticker ones will slow down the site experience for you a lot, so avoid them even if they *appear* to work.

Also avoid the "-missing" themes, they're buggy (people's avatar pics go missing when you use then, for eg.)
@obi

It's only been a few months since I discovered Nijisanji, but already a week without watching them feels like something big is missing.

Had a busy (& satisfying) IRL week, now looking forward to binging on the stuff I missed, once I get back home.

Pithy aphorisms can't capture all the nuances and caveats - it's a lossy compression - but this conveys the core takeaway of this idea pretty well.

@hwestiii
I used to think that, and that would be simpler to explain :blobsmilesweat:

In reality it's more like: it goes out to any other instance where at least one person follows you. That is, if one person on qoto.org follows you, then your posts or boosts will be visible on here. If let's say none of your followers are from Fosstodon.org, then the Federated timeline there won't show your posts - even though your instance (I assume) federates with it - because the server then doesn't know your account exists.

In this case, I think it's probably the case that someone on qoto.org follows the @local account that boosted your post. That's why your post appeared in the Federated timeline here for me.

@hwestiii
Don't know if MetaText does something unique, but in general in Mastodon the difference is: Home is posts from the people (and hashtags) you are following. Local is just any post from any user who signed up on lor.sh.

@hwestiii
If you mean who sees it, people like me who check out the Federated timeline out of boredom/curiosity.
And people in your instance see it on the Local timeline.
And there's probably people who follow that hashtag or check it out from time to time to help people with the migration.
(And your followers of course.)

The search on the JuliaHub site (juliahub.com/ui/Search) is an incredible resource.

Came across a macro in a snippet of code, and need to know where the macro is from? Try searching for it via the Symbols tab, filtering by "definition" and "macro".

You can also search across the documentations of all registered packages, regex-search through public Julia code, etc.

It's super frustrating to work with computers for a living, because it means I know:

1) Exactly how bad they are
2) Exactly how good they can be under perfect circumstances
3) Why we have 1 instead of 2.

Human dataviz is more likely to choose the right level of abstraction to make the most sense of the data. You do have to work about biases and distortions in the presentation, but the same is true of ML algorithms too, just more subtly so.

@MichaelPorter
Edit is from a newer version of the Mastodon software, doesn't run it yet. An update is planned (for this and other features like language tagging), but no specific timelines yet.

Guess I should make an intro - I'm a Nuclear Chemistry Technician at a nuclear power facility. Previously, I was a man of many positions in the environmental consulting field - environmental driller (on land and sea), fisheries biologist, and environmental scientist. I've sampled and was proficient in an array of environmental medias - biological, sediment, soil, groundwater, air, and radiological. I may only have a BS in Marine Science, but I'm well versed in so many sciences.

@Pat a follow-up question, if you don't mind:

What if those million people are all convicted criminals in prisons around the world? Would you give up your life to save them?
