Turns out it was all easier than I was expecting because I use 1 byte to store 4bpp (16 colours), so I have *checks notes* 4 bits that aren't used.

So basically, any color over 15 is *transparent*. No need for a mask 🤦‍♂️

@reidrac You can chose one of the bits to stand for transparency flag. And another for collision checking. Still, 2 more bits for user data. Alternative - 3-bit collision mask.
