“AI’s Electricity Use Is Spiking So Fast It’ll Soon Use as Much Power as an Entire Country”

Side-eyeing every single one of you who is enabling this. futurism.com/the-byte/ai-elect

@baldur

For the planet to survive capitalism and technofascism have to die

Businessmen and engineers cannot be allowed to decide how technology is used

@dpwiz

Great question.

The best answer is likely some boring committee up of artists, scholars scientists philosophers and the two above

Society and culture can be shaped and a society that lets only the rich and powerful dictate how tools are used is the dystopia we live in today

Imagine how fucked up buildings would be without zoning, architects or input from the public

Businessmen would make all Walmarts all the time

Engineers would make what happens when you have them make a UI

@rticks I find it hard to imagine how this would work. Can you ground this in some example for "AI" tech discussed in the article above?

@dpwiz

Sure.

Understand that we dont know what we dont know. We all imagine and guess that llms might somehow eventually turn into true digital general intelligence.

Thats like building the atomic bomb with scientists and only military advisers with no civilian political infrastructure involved. The very nature of the technology demands psychologisrs , sociologists, cyber ethicists, as well as representatives from the professions this tech will disrupt consulted at every step along the way

@dpwiz LLMs are based on theft and dont have to be many artists and writers would happily contribute to their construction but engineers and technofascists just stole it all by scraping the net

The next life form potentially birthed by thieves so people who want to be artists can pretend to be artists?

Fuck that.

@rticks would you be fine with them if they trained only on legitimately produced curriculum? So yeah, people who want to be artists can pretend to be artists (or, rather, just *be* curators in this specific niche of "generative this and that") - would it be a fair play?

@dpwiz

I would be fine from an ethical stand point using it as a writer yes.

I wouldnt sneer at any item produced by it and call it theft.

The futirist in me would not be satisfied. If you want to play God, make sure you are measuring and responding to problems you cant anticipate loke Fuckbick and Algoaddiction for kids.

Follow

@rticks huh? How that would still be theft, given that they are the authors of the training materials?..

@dpwiz

It is patently unacceptable to say that artists and writers agreed to be put out of a job by slime machines simply by putting their work on the internet

Any llm trained on z library IS flat out theft

@dpwiz Let me rephrase this so you can understand

Engineers are fabulpus people who solve problems

Businessmen arent

Neither can think out of their stupid little boxes

Tech is too powerful to leave to their decisions. Full stop. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

Anyone who isnt a businessmen or an engineer understands this.

@dpwiz Mary Shelly didnt write Frankenstein as a how to manual for "Wouldnt it be cool to try?"

@rticks the problem I see with governance here is that you need to have the consent of the governed. Why should an engineer building their stuff listen to some "cyber ethicist" (is that a thing now?..) coming out of nowhere?

@rticks um... I really mean the materials, like texts and drawings were coming from the team itself and. It is patently impossible right now, but that's the entire point of this charade - to find/make a machine that really learns. So, a team of arti-gogues made such a machine. It reads its ABCs, learns to learn, then watches some YouTube drawing tutorials with subtitles and starts painting its own stuff. Is it still theft?

@dpwiz

Adieu.

May you find the answers you benevolently seek elsewhere because you clearly arent hearing mine
