@lightweight Personally, I don't like the whole cloud model, whether it's OSS or proprietary. It goes hand in hand with outsourcing management of IT, havng admin staff, the whole bit. Any outfit that calls themselves a "knowledge company" and doesn't run their IT in house is selling fairy tales.
@nzlemming @lightweight Hm. The model is good - it allows on demand scalability and sharing resources/costs. Imagine the whole internet running on one cloud - when user attention shifts to slashdot its share of resources grows and reddit's share shrinks. When there are more users on reddit its share grows and slashdot's share shrinks. The two sites effectively share resources/costs, which means more efficient operation. Of course, the devil is in the details - more precisely in the billing 
@nzlemming @lightweight You are right. I hate my company's dependance on gmail, google docs, Notion, etc. We had a small crisis recently, with some documents being put on private accounts of former employees... I would much prefer to have these services running locally and managed internally.

@extrn @nzlemming the real problem is that now no businesses can ever be freehold with technology - they'll always be paying escalating rental costs, and have no mobility because most are voluntarily locking themselves into one supplier's proprietary cloud. @extrn @lightweight There's a difference between public-facing and private infrastructure. Outsourcing the basic infrastructure within your company or organisation means you lose control of it. Not everything needs to be on the internet BTW.
