Hey, APC-likers. Is the USB monitoring connection to my UPS actually worth plugging in

What the last few weeks have taught me is there's a lot of people in my mastodon TL that lick APCs

Okay so everyone's saying "yes, the cable will tell your computer to shut down" but here's the thing, I bought the APC so my computer *wouldn't* shut down. It was already shutting down very effectively on its own. Can y'all assure me the APC will ONLY send the shutdown command when it's REALLY about to die, not just cuz of an over power event or a near-EOL battery?

@mcc I can't speak for every UPS but my APC makes this behavior very configurable in cooperation with `apcupsd` running on the system (config file is `/etc/apcupsd/apcupsd.conf` on my system)

I believe what is actually being "sent" is just the status of the UPS and working out what (if anything) to do about that is the receiving end's problem. The specific settings I have configured locally are `BATTERYLEVEL` and `MINUTES` which are the percentage and "time left" shutoff thresholds respectively
