I'm remotely supporting a customer with a data loss situation... they've purchased a new 10TB disk, and put it in the system, but it appears to be very unhappy...

Is there some init process I don't know about for new-new disks?

It's a WUS721010ALE6L4 "data center drive".

I can't read SMART data, and any I/O on the storage results in an I/O error, and lots of complaints in dmesg.

Seems to be a rabbit of negative euphoria to me... 🐇

@attie I agree that's weird; says SMART enabled and then craps itself. What SATA controller is it attached to? What are the first exceptions in the log after boot?
