@brianleroux can arc.codes manage an S3 bucket for me? I want a couple of lambdas which can write files into, and read files from, the bucket, and for a file in the bucket to get a URL so it can be visited directly. (If I can put basic auth password protection on that then that'd be nice, but it's not critical.) I'm terrible at cloudformation, so "write my own cloudformation stuff for it and stick that in my arc folder" is not an option :-)
@sil it can and does! By default if you declare http we automatically add a bucket intended for static assets. I have the Cloudformation laying around for the other variety of use cases: user generated content, special website chrome assets like fonts, etc. what's the use case here ? I can shoot ya some examples
@brianleroux basically, I want to make a couple of scheduled lambdas which hit various APIs (some internal to AWS such as cognito, some external such as Google Analytics) and yoink out some data once a day and write that data into JSON files in the S3 bucket, and then one more lambda which reads back all that JSON data for today and writes out a static HTML dashboard to summarise it all. Then I can give the dashboard HTML page a URL and go look at it for updates every morning :)
@sil easy peasy, I'm just omw out for an overnighter in the forest but will whip up an example for you tmrw! this is exactly the sort of thing architect was designed to do. Some custom cloudformation will necessary to give the scheduled lambda permissions to talk to your resources (like cognito) but rest of that is builtin.
@brianleroux no rush! I was going to put it all together by hand and then I thought, hang on, this is what architect is for, isn't it? good excuse to try it out for real :)
@sil awesome, yup perfect fit!
Definitely hope to see an owl. Weird fact: no fox or coyote in Vancouver Island (idk why) but cougar, wolf and bear not uncommon!
@brianleroux hopefully you either did not encounter a bear, or you saw one from a long way away :)
@sil no bear! trumpeter swans tho. (hackin' up an example today!)
@sil well, i maybe went and had a little too much fun with this (used it as an excuse to test some of our newer work) … lmk if you wanna hop on a vid call to walk through anything
@sil @brianleroux this support was also a missing piece when we last looked at Arc a year or so ago.
Looks like same pattern could be used to manage arbitrary other AWS objects in the same stack.
Reasonably neat...
@falken @sil yeah plugins allow Architect userland do anything cloudformation can do. Very powerful for sure. Anytime we need a plugin it's a good case for baking into the framework. This case, private/public bucket w upload, especially has come up a lot recently. Hopefully see it first class soon.
