@Edent for now you can. Prey they do not alter the deal. Ideally by buying non smart to prove the market

@codinghorror I for one, will not miss every mobile phone manufacturer having their own proprietary power connector (or three).

Buying a phone charger in the late 90s~early 2000s was a bloody nightmare. It's like buying a printer cartridge today.

Oh, it's 2024 and people are still surprised by random app store rejections by Apple?

Just build a web app.

@mcc @mhoye and this is why "offline" updates are a thing you can opt for in 23.10 at least. All the updates are then done super early at boot, not then when /usr might be busy

I've read the case filed by South Africa in the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide. Have you?

No matter whether you think Israel's actions rise to the level of genocide or not, the facts and evidence in the filing are chilling and deserve international review and response.

We make computers for people who like computers.

We also make computers for people who hate computers.

The Atari 2600 LEGO set has 2532 pieces. YOU HAD ONE JOB.

The 37C3 talk on TEA1 encryption (used by police and military units in europe) is hilarious.
The hackers announced they found a vulnerability in the encryption, and one of the ways the organization that standardized the TEA1 encryption downplayed the breach was by saying that it wasn't viable, because it required "high powered GPUs".

So they ported their algorithm to a Toshiba Satellite P1 running Windows 95, and re-cracked the encryption there.

@mcc the phrasing “by turning this setting on” is a pretty dark pattern for a newly, silently introduced setting that defaults to on

Also, fwiw, you can deploy single lambda functions directly in approx 3s and, of course, Architect sandbox works locally and starts up subsecond. As far as iteration speed goes: there is no one or way faster to build for AWS han Architect (or if you prefer #frontend Enhance)

@0xabad1dea I'm not so sure about that. I'm using the pro version of Windows 10 and my attempts to not use Bing were eventually defeated completely. There is no "absolutely the fuck not" switch for Windows surveilling my local file searches by forwarding them to Bing. I had to turn it off with registry hacks.

I do agree whatever scam they're pulling with juicing the OpenAI numbers cannot possibly be financially sustainable. I don't know how long that can last.

FRESH WORDS

From me, on BBC Future

It's about how a teenage achieved the impossible in an arcade game nearly three times older than him, about how communities support learning, and about why I'm optimistic about human flourishing in the digital age

The way the social media cards have fallen, I think my natural home is now here on Mastodon - despite its limitations.

Overall I prefer the exchanges on
here, which can be considered views rather than instant 'takes'.

Threads is now tending towards toxicity (especially the default "for you" tab which you cannot opt out of; Bluesky has not caught me; and I really only visit X for the Aston Villa tweeters still on there.
