@pluralistic here in the UK, operation of a mastodon instance will soon be a minefield, thanks to the ill-conceived, all encompassing "online harms" bill.

The duties imposed upon even the smallest operators are extremely onerous, and come with significant penalties. Crazy.

@cstross @mekkaokereke @tellyworth here’s a 12yo beside a vehicle whose owner pays the same registration fee as I do for my small hatchback. It’s also exempt from emissions targets and is probably a tax deduction for its owner. It didn’t fit in the parking space.

We haven’t switched off the server yet.

@MatthewToad42 @chris @nafnlaus Yes, but without USAF support they wouldn't have got funding AT ALL, and there'd have been no post-Apollo crewed spaceflight. It was a devil's bargain (largely thanks to Nixon).

The interesting thing about Falcon 9/Dragon is that SpaceX is in profit selling crew launches to NASA for roughly 1/30th the per-seat price of Shuttle, with a system that's about the same proportion reusable—but cost less than a single shuttle flight to develop, with fewer failure modes.
