"Web Push on iOS requires installing the web app"

Just when I was coming around to thinking I shouldn't always assume the worst when it comes to the web on iOS....
It's #maccSciBar again
So sorry for this thread. The TL;DR here is that a timeline with things like the Online Safety Bill is a bad timeline. But if we must live in a bad timeline, I’d rather live in one where the UK is losing the war for (tech CEO) hearts and minds and putting its economy on the line.
Anyway the nature of threats is that if people don’t voluntarily comply under threat, sometimes you have to follow through with the promised consequences. This is the frame through which I view the UK Online Safety bill.
Trying out @mammoth
So far, liking its clean aesthetic.
So many cool Mastodon clients! This is like the golden age of Twitter clients again.
From @Riana_Crypto a🔥 takedown & dissection of another vague, menacing UK anti-privacy proposal. This one would criminalize “sophisticated encrypted communications devices"
When the UK swings for fundamental rights they really put their back into it.
Okay folks, the ones running a #NAS using a #RaspberryPi... what software are you using? I am looking for software RAID 1 and RAID 2 support support. I am looking at #OpenMediaVault atm https://www.openmediavault.org/features.html Anyone tried anything else?
@almalinux how about `python -m http.server 8000` ?
@SwiftOnSecurity I can't give away details, but in discussions with one of the large European auto manufacturers about their technology, they mentioned that their current cars have over 50 unique ARM processors of various specs and capabilities in them, and that number was expected to exceed 100 shortly. (This was pre pandemic chip shortage.)
Your car isn't a CPU. It's a distributed compute cluster.
I did it! My book on the history of the #Atari Jaguar is finished and freely available for download over at archive dot org. It took my a while to get there, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I hope you will appreciate and enjoy it as well. Let me know what you think and I would be thankful if you would share this post.
What's going on with WebKit is not "normal". At no time since 2007 has the codebase gotten this much love this quickly; but why? Time for a deep dive:

@pettter @eyrea @dampscot @qag I live within 500 metres of the centre of a capital city! Despite which, there are some small parks within 500 metres and a national park with a freaking *extinct volcano* in it about 1.5km away, a 30 minute walk or single bus ride. (Bus fares cost £1.80 flat fee, any distance, by the way. Capped at about £5 for unlimited rides in any day.)
I actually think western social media platforms are entering somewhat of a death spiral. They're simultaneously losing users to TikTok and revenue to brands sponsoring influencers instead of buying ad space. They're being forced to find ways to get users to pay for the platform, undermining usability in the process. I imagine they'll continue to reinstate and amplify problematic accounts to drive traffic and engagement, continue to make the user experience worse through paid features, as well as coming up with ways to extort influencers. I think ultimately TikTok will get banned or forced to sell, because it simply can't not be. It undermines the US' near monopolistic control of social media and threatens multiple of their largest companies.
“The web's biggest super power is that you do not have to install an app. You can just scan a barcode, click a link, search for something or even type an address and BOOM! you're there! There is no need to install anything!”
This is the thing I think is important. A web app can be ephemeral; I use it today, and then never again. A platform-specific native app isn’t like that; I’m forced to embrace it even if I don’t want to.
