"The simple repair is still a wonder. Dell can talk a big game with its concepts and Apple will send massive repair kits to your home, but Framework includes one tool in the box that lets me confidently make any change I want." - FreedmanAE

If Facebook and Instagram were to join the Fediverse and you could follow users from that world from your instance, would you do it?

Boosts appreciated. I'd like to know the current consensus of the Fediverse.

If you're out for a walk this Sunday, and spot a memorial bench - we'd love a photo on openbenches.org/

We're within touching distance of 28,000 submissions!

Boosts (and geotagged photos) most appreciated!

This is why we used Docker or another container tech like LXD or FreeBSD jails. There is no need to break the whole thing because a newer version of Python or PHP is installed on your Unix or Linux server.

Thought I’d post some of my old #NerdStitch projects, that I only shared on the bird site before. First up, classic Mac OS “sampler”.

There we go. Finally got a 5.25" floppy disk etched onto a 3.5" floppy disk

Cynics would argue there's no such thing as a glorious failure, and this account invites cynics to go away and boil their heads - JUST LOOK AT THIS THING!

Basically a caged ekranoplan, the Aerotrain was the future of the railways. As long as you remember that the future of the railways in the late 1960s was usually a great big government axe.

Still, a two-seater Pratt & Whitney jet-powered aircushioned hot rod locomotive, eh? Stick that in your Whyte notation and smoke it.

So, some of you are observing that my posts are really dumb.

Yes, but they pale in comparison to some of my life choices.

UK peeps: consider signing this government petition (to halt passage of the Online Safety Bill, which will gut end-to-end encryption including your online banking security, personal message privacy, and right to privacy in general): petition.parliament.uk/petitio

Disagreeing with the results of #Eurovision is what brings all us Europeans together. We can't fight it. Nobody dies over it. We all come together to wonder who the hell voted for all the other countries we didn't vote for. It is the most wonderful of wonderful things.

Also, and this is key:

"Verifiers SHOULD NOT require memorized secrets to be changed arbitrarily (e.g., periodically). However, verifiers SHALL force a change if there is evidence of compromise of the authenticator.”

You and your friends hold each other hostage on social media because you can't all agree on when to quit and where to go. #Interoperability guarantees the #RightToExit:

I'm not planning to leave Twitter at the moment, but I'd say in the last couple of weeks I've reached the point where if I was not on Twitter, I would not miss it all that much. Thanks to Mastodon and other services, what Twitter gives me as a user is replaceable. If that's true of me, it's true of others. That should scare Elon Musk a whole lot.

When you're the head of a government agency, you're usually told that every major software project is going great. Every month you get a stoplight chart saying everything's green. Until, one month, it's red, and you're told the project has "failed." ...What? Why?

I’ve written this short guide to how an agency principal should oversee a load-bearing custom software project. It requires a little learning and a little involvement, with the benefit of less humiliation. waldo.jaquith.org/blog/2023/05

@cstross I want to see a cage match between the Fermi paradox and the Drake equation.

Why a man worth over £700 million is doing a job worth £164k

Yes it’s true, we’ve taken down the main gateway.

Will put up a message on the website with more details today moaparty.com
