WOW! The BBC now as it's own instance!

BBC >>> social.bbc/about

"The team at BBC Research & Development are researching social technologies and exploring possibilities for the #BBC. One part of our work is to establish a BBC presence in the Fediverse... This is an experiment - we will run it for 6 months, and then look at how much value it has provided"

I hadn't expected Nigel Farage's new banking campaign website to be so frank or attractively designed. Spread the word! accountclosed.org.uk

Self-interest has always been the overriding policy of the Tories.

When #Sunak decides his party’s appeal should be the ‘right’ to carry on trashing the planet and making children’s lives less safe in towns and cities…then you realise there is no desire to ‘conserve’ left in the Conservative Party.

@bazzargh @cstross I occasionally find myself in the bookshop looking for something to read and realise, sadly, that I am, in some weird way, hoping for a surprise Culture novel to appear magically on the shelf.

Addendum: this is draft 2 of the space opera that, well, my elevator pitch was "Iain isn't writing any more, alas, so let's see if I can do something that makes readers feel the same way as his Culture novels without in any way being derivative of the Culture".

It's probably a failure on those terms, but I had to try, right?

If you're still using Chrome for performance reasons:
- Firefox is now faster than Chrome out-of-the-box
- Firefox uses less memory than Chrome
- Contrary to Chrome, Firefox does not restrict Ad blockers, which will make your browsing experience much faster (and safer).

#Mozilla has published its position on the "Web Environment Integrity API" proposal put forward by the #Google #Chrome team.

First paragraph: "Mozilla opposes this proposal because it contradicts our principles and vision for the Web."

Hopefully you can see the roots of this whole X pivot thing now. Musk has decided that the way to save Twitter and regain his genius status is to fall back on his unrealised vision from 1999.

Build "the world's financial nexus" as he described it then. /23

damn this is amazing, the EU is mandating fast charging stations every 60km along major highways *and* they must be payable by card/contactless without third party app downloads: fleeteurope.com/en/new-energie

I posted about switching to Firefox as my "daily driver" browser as a little tiny step away from Chromium browser hegemony, and I had a ton of people in the replies suggesting I should just use Brave or Edge or Opera or Vivaldi instead.

I'm a little concerned that people don't realize just how pervasive this problem is. Every single one of those sits on top of the Chromium codebase.

I have seen Twitter links and tweets embedded in many news sites, blogs, forums, and archives since 2007. All of them are going to turn into link rot. No, other social media got so much love from news sites like Twitter. It is a cautionary tale.

@pwaring the problem isn't it's stale, it's evolving fast but dangerously.

I love Dan Slott’s response to Musk’s rebrand:

“They're changing the Twitter logo to an "X".

Literally the icon I click on when I want to close something on my computer.”

Requiring a "skilled person" write a report before mass surveillance is imposed does little

Especially given that the UK gov HAS ALREADY heard from hundreds of skilled experts restating longstanding consensus: there's no such thing as a safe backdoor.

The director of the research group selected by the government to conduct a technical evaluation of the “safety tech” that would likely be implemented via the Online Safety Bill spy clause states unequivocally that it's not fit for use:
