Nearly every material, whether it is solid, liquid, or gas, expands when its temperature goes up and contracts when its temperature goes down.

There are a few exceptions, but by and large, materials conform strictly to this principle. There is, however, a class of metal alloys called Invars (think invariable), that stubbornly refuse to change in size and density over a large range of temperatures.

For over 100 years, the source of this unique property has remained a mystery, but now, researchers have finally discovered the mechanism that causes Invars to behave the way that they do.

It's my latest for work.

I wrote about something that's near and dear to me: breaking normal website things. I wish we would let our web apps just do very normal website things. Copy text. Navigating via links. etc. What ones did I miss? heather-buchel.com/blog/2023/0

OpenWindows! this seems to be running pretty well. SunOS 4.1.4 is a better match for this system than Solaris 2.5.1.

I knew someday I'd get too old to recognize new celebrities but I did not expect to get too old to recognize what celebrities are famous for. every day I go "is that a new singer" and then a person born in 2007 goes "ew no they're a peeble streamer on doop" as I inch closer to the grave

Well, bugger

Off to bricklink !

S+H for one of these is gonna kill, but don't seem to have any spare to hand and can't fashion an alternative mount for Technic brake disks :-(

Just a note on the #BBC:

The BBC is not just the editors of The Today Programme, or Question Time. It is not just that Panorama about ADHD or Stephen Nolan’s Mermaids podcast.

The BBC is also Yasmin Finney and Ncuti Gatwa on Doctor Who. It is Newsround. It is Horrible Histories doing the Bristol bus boycott. It is CBBC dramas for children about autism. It is a platform for new music of all kinds on radio. It has no ads.

Hating “the BBC” because of Tory news editors misses the bigger picture.

“Tech experts are starting to doubt that ChatGPT and A.I. ‘hallucinations’ will ever go away: ‘This isn’t fixable’”

More accurately, AI researchers have always said that this isn’t fixable but y’all were too obsessed with listening to con artists to pay attention but now the con is wearing thin. fortune.com/2023/08/01/can-ai-

In the replies to my question about the optimal way to install Python on OS X I received replies recommending, if I have counted correctly, six entirely different ways to install and manage your system Python. I appreciate all of these replies greatly and would like to announce that from this moment forward I am writing my shell scripts in Rust

So great to finally see social.bbc go public. #BBC as part of the Fediverse is a great step forward.

"We're using social.bbc as the domain, so you can be sure these accounts are genuinely from the BBC. And by linking to and from the BBC’s website, we have verified our identity on Mastodon."

Can't wait to see what comes next. This is only the start...
