The tomb of Christopher Columbus in the Cathedral of Seville, October 2022. The remains of Columbus are well travelled. Starting in Valladolid, Spain, they were moved to Seville, then Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), on to Havana (Cuba), and finally back to Seville in 1899. #TombTuesday
@tombarkas Columbus’ family requested the first move to Seville; a few decades later remains moved to what is now Dominican Republic, as this was Columbus’ wish for his burial site. In 1795 Spain lost control of the Dominican Republic so remains moved to Cuba. Later, Cuba gained independence from Spanish rule, so remains shipped back to Seville. The location of the remains seem to mirror the ebb and flow of the Spanish colonial empire.
