What is the primary functional purpose of divots / dimples in a golf ball.

@freemo my understanding was it improves stability making the ball fly straighter and more accurately

@M0YNG Nope, in fact strictly speaking if it had any effect on accuracy I would expect it to decrease it, though I'm not sure. But it isnt the main reason regardless.
