Hello @freemo
Why is that I have a follow request even though my account is not private?? ![]()
@mur2501 That is very weird, never heard of that. Has it ever been on private?
@mur2501 Just checked, its because we had silenced him because he was spamming the local feed with automated posts and then wasnt responding to moderator messages. I see now in our notes we silenced him and didnt suspend since the spam was just music and nothing commercial, and because he never got back to us. Since it was non-commercial we felt no need to upgrade this to a suspension.
@freemo
I see, if it's only music then I can accept it ![]()
By the way when do you consider something as a spam?? ![]()
@mur2501 this isnt spam in the sense that it broke a rule by being spam, i meant spam in the sense that it was a lot of posts in short succession (spam basically just means unwanted posts or content)... There are two relevant things that might get moderators concerned 1) spam of a commercial nature, particularly by an automated account selling something. this we will suspend pretty quickly. 2) automated or high-frequency posts that appear in the local timeline, particularly low-effort or generated posts.
The issue here was #2, it appeared as if the user had a script running where every time they played some music it would post to the timeline they were playing it. We basically asked that for posts of that nature the user make the post unlisted (they can still post it, just dont want it clogging up the local timeline in such huge numbers), their other posts were welcome to remain public/listed.
But since the user didnt respond to us we were forced to silence the whole account. We mentioned in the email during the silence that we would reverse the silence if he reached out to us and resolved the issue.
@freemo
I see, probably the person never checked the emails ![]()
@mur2501 We tried via mastodon message first, email came second.. we try to make multiple attempts before resorting to a silence.
@freemo
Ohh the person is deliberate on action ![]()
Anyway, how many times have you came across reports of your own account?? ![]()
@mur2501 I have been reported a total of 11 times since the founding of QOTO. Aside from reports in the very early history of QOTO all reports on me or any other moderator must be considered and decided on by the other moderators and I get no say on the resolution of my own reports.
@mur2501 Thank you, that is one of the greater compliments I could think to receive.
If there is one thing I learned working with Data Science it is that my assumptions can never be trusted (even if i base my decision on data, there is still that chance of misinterpriting).
So even if I take a position on something I am always very willing (and in fact I try to seek it out) to consider how I could be wrong. Doubly so because I know how crippling confirmation bias can be when unchallenged to ones own growth.
Its a trait I find useful even outside of human interactions. Programming is actually a place I have noticed it alot lately. If something isnt working and im trying to debug it it is common human tendency to make certain assumptions that a variable or part of the code must work a certain way, so you assume its value and that it couldnt possibly be contributing to the issue. This pattern often leads to a difficulty in debugging a problem. I try to assume even the most fundamental assumptions could be wrong, like two numbers adding up to something I expect it to add up to, and when I debug I am not above checking the value of even the variables I feel sure about. All to often I find my assumptions were, in fact, incorrect.
@freemo
I got this type of thinking from 3 places:
1) Doubting my cult like community from very early age and eventually opening the chains mind to understanding how people could be controlled or driven by beliefs in a bad as well as a good way.
2) Programming as you said, especially I saw how programming books explains everything as a godly truth or something even though everything in this computer world is just an abstraction and there is no reason for the abtractions to only be this way they can be anyway however we want. (I an someone who always likes to go into the most basic thing happening behind a complex abstraction of something)
3) Maths, it's also the same as programming
