Qoto.org blocking, genocide mention

Qoto.org says it has zero tolerance for hatred, but also "does not currently block any Fediverse servers".

I messaged Qoto admin to ask whether they would block servers that incited genocide. Admin replied Qoto would not block such servers.

I asked about the danger of radicalisation, and they said "(people) aren't going to read some random thing on the internet and turn bad. It just doesn't happen."

Have blocked qoto.org, would encourage others to do same.

Qoto.org blocking, genocide mention

@FediThing Admin either has a VERY poor understanding of how the last 6-7 years and even prior have been around the internet or is purposefully part of the problem.

@JustYourBud

No I recognize the problem with the deplorable racism and sexism and anti-LGBTQ nonsense around the internet. I sympathize.

My policy has always been about protecting the lives of the LGBTQ community as a top priority and at their request. I have explained this multiple times. The safety of their lives trumps all, nothing more and nothing less.

Not one user from our server has ever shown to become radicalized... but we have saved lives... I call that a win and I wont change our policy, putting LGBTQ people at risk for lives simply because its unpopular, FULL STOP.

@FediThing

@freemo
I don’t necessarily see how shutting inherently bad servers out would put people at risk of anything. I’m glad your instance has saved lives but I’m not sure how that’s related to the policy mentioned by @FediThing.

I’m sure you’re a good person with good intentions, and my initial response to the toot might’ve been assuming a bit much based on nothing, but your policy seems hard to defend in some scenarios (1/2)

@freemo
I understand this wasn’t the initial scenario and might be off-topic, but now I’m curious. If there was an entire instance dedicated to harassing folks of the LGBTQ community, and they were targeting many users that are within your instance, how would you respond?

I see value in not fediblocking anyone from anyone else, as it can lead to its own abuse from admins. Allowing the user to decide is valid. But in scenarios like this it can be too much to handle

If you dont understand how it puts their lives at risk then you clearly didnt read the article I wrote that started all this. It illustrates, in some detail, exactly why that is the case.

Please read the explanation here. I cover quite clearly it puts their lives at risk and as I said has been known to save lives in the past. If you still have questions or objections after you read my side of it I will be more than happy to hear and discuss them:

@freemo
Thank you for sharing, this did put things into perspective.

My opinion on the issue at large still stands, though. It varies case by case, nothing is black and white. Both fediblocking and having an open platform have pros and cons. While I understand your intent, and I’m sure you’ve fostered a wonderful community with great people (you yourself seem nice too) I can’t say I’m surprised at all about how this has spread to others.

@JustYourBud I have no problem at all if a person or admin wishes to block us if they are informed about our stance and understand it.

The issue is largely that this is a misinformation campaign by a Nazi fueling tensions... The vast majority of people speaking out against us are doing it out of context, or straight up lying.. THAT is my issue. If they shared our stance honestly and wanted to defederate, then have at it.

This post is a prime example of that. Look how he intentionally took quotes out of context and left out all the content around the conversation that would have actually allowed people to draw an informed decision of their own, rather than being manipulated into siding with him.

See this post I made that exposes the entire conversation and shows how the OP took things deliberately out of context:

@freemo

Yeah in THAT regard I understand your frustrations. It’s unfortunate that it happened this way and I am sorry about that.

I guess this just goes to show exactly how gullible we all are and why many people have radicalized viewpoints lol (I am also gullible and didn’t do my research with this issue and for that I apologize :crying_cat_3:)

@JustYourBud well for what it is worth i am working on a solution... not sure if it will be adopted but if it is then it may solve this whole issue.

@freemo Well again I wish you luck and hope things can get resolved for you in that regard. I’m sure there’ll still be people blocking, but at the very least maybe it won’t be because of a Nazi-led smear campaign and instead because some people genuinely have a problem with instances not fediblocking whatsoever.

You have a good day as well :abunhdhappy:

@freemo
I hate to say it but we just unfortunately live in a world where the vision of a completely connected fediverse is impossible to create and maintain without these kinds of problems.

Again I can see both sides of the situation, as we’ve seen positive and negative outcomes from both, and in some cases I feel pretty conflicted about admin power vs user choice, because both can be valid. I think some fediblocking is far too overboard, while some open platforms are just terrible.

@JustYourBud As I said a completely connected fediverse is NOT the goal, nor is it the issue... the issue is that lies and disinformation are being spread and used as fodder to defederate along with peer pressure.

@freemo
Meanwhile I completely understand why some would block instances and I know there are open platforms where moderation can be handled. It’s a complex issue and I need to get out of bed now :kirbyroll: so I won’t waste anymore of your time. I enjoyed the discussion though and I wish you luck with your instance as well as anyone who doesn’t want to federate with it.

@freemo
I guess in the end that’s the fun of the fediverse—everyone has a choice and we can have these discussions about it, even if sometimes we won’t see eye to eye.

Still more than what bird app offered us.
