Someone really needs to build some sort of logarithmic volume filter into linux... a way to keep the normal volume scenes loud enough to hear but reduce the volume on the loud scenes. This way you can listen to a movie in the middle of the night and not annoy your neighbors and not need to keep lowering it everytime an action scene hits.... how is this not a thing already!
@GeePawHill It would be soooo simple to fix too, I just dont get it.. Once I built a physical device that just goes inline on the audio cable and it provided dynamic level control.. it was a fun analog project... If your interested I can show you it running in a simulator online, its kinda cool.

With particular emphasis on the temporal characteristics (impulse response) of the gain control parameter and the logarithmic characteristic of the AGC.

It's existed in many forms since around the 1920s.
@Pantangelini I meant to say, why doesnt it exist in linux.. it should be part of the advancec volume screen (or atleast some plugin for it)

It's crazy simple, so it should exist.

Meanwhile, I simply use headphones.
@freemo Modern soundtrack dynamics basically terrible, in my experience. Va and I just close-caption everything and keep the volume low. No other good answer for us.
